Merry Christmas everyone -

I still have about 40 pages to read, but I first need to make a new dessert.
We are doing Boxing Day tomorrow with our British and Aussie friends. I tried making Italian torrone with almonds and hazelnuts, but when I poured the hot candy syrup into the meringe, it all turned into a nasty hard mess that has cemented up my Kithcen Aid, I had to use a hammer to get the batter whisk off! ... and it tasted burnt even though it never even got hot enough (Kitchen was very smokey, so maybe the problem is my thermometer).

I'm making a French Mocha Yule Log too - I already have a dozen eggs in the thing and still have to add more to it! It is mostly egg whites as every component starts out with a meringe - luckily my hens have started laying again. I will also be making creme brulee as I have all those yolks to use up!

I hope everyone is having a good day! If I ignore the fact that my DH spent his day playing video games as usual, mine was pretty good. My fever has subsided and my kids are getting along. I gave Alex a recipe and he made an apple pie all by himself, and Olivia made the almond pine-cones for the Yule Log.

Never dismissed, yes, but losing a child must be about as sad as it gets. I can see how losing a pet can be more painful than losing a distant relative one hardly knew.

Merry Christmas to all! I am so sorry for those who are feeling / experiencing a loss. For me, the people and animals I love seem to pass away more often at the holiday season than at any other time of the year. I don't know why. The loss is hard enough, but going through it at the holidays just adds another layer of pain.
I agree with the poster who said to tell DD about the dog's passing sooner rather than later. I also went through not being told as a child and felt it was betrayal.
Nothing like Christmas to get cooperation out of the kids. Amazing how well they get along - and offer to help - on Christmas

Now how can we get that cooperation the rest of the year? Anyone...???
Hope everyone has a great Boxing Day tomorrow - and sorry, Ogress, about your Kitchen Aid. If it makes you feel any better, oldest daughter was making microwave mac n cheese yesterday ... and forgot to add water. The thing turned into a flaming mess. Once I doused it with water, it looked like a meteorite. The house was full of smoke and the melting packaging left an acrid stink that I can still smell more than a day later. Not sure that stink will ever leave the microwave ...

Sorry you are having family problems but try looking at it this way. They have allowed you to enjoy ALL of the new little mans first Christmas rather than having to share it with others who seem to maybe be less than deserving of the time.

Just a note if you have chicks in the house when you burn something and there is smoke. I lost a brooder full of chicks and even the newly hatched still in the incubator because DH burned a tortilla. I was in bed and took me a while to figure out what happened the next morning. Smoke inhalation. Their little lungs can't take it.

Sorry to hear you lost your chicks.

Was there a NON STICK pan involved in this??? They give off toxic odors when cooking normal and if they get overheated they are VERY bad. Also DO NOT use a self cleaning oven if you have birds in the house.
