My parents were horders. After dad passed away, we helped Mom move from a 3,500 Square foot house to a 1200 square foot house. We rented the biggest dumpster available and went through the house and the shop one room at a time. We had to do it when mom was not home as she'd rescue the crap from the dumpster. Dad could not throw out a paint can if it had more than an inch of paint in it - we found many cans of paint dating from the early 60's with pictures of beehived housewives in pearls and an apron working in their kitchens on the labels of the paint cans. We found no les than 39 sets of Allen wrenches. seems whenever Dad would need a wrench, he'd buy a new one rather than search though his mess. Mom was a horder of towels, blankets, canned fod - things she ran out of living in a Nazi occupied town in Holland as a little girl. She also hoarded plastic margargine tubs, deli conatainers, etc...

Now I'm a hoarder. I really need to get rid of all my college books and class notes - It's not like they will ever be used again.... and hunks of fabric, sewing notions, scrap-book stuff (last thing I put in a scrap book was Alex getting on the school-bus in first grade. He's in 7t grae now.), beading stuff.....

wow, you might have to add on to the house for a room just for STUFF!!!!!!!!

I've got to join you there for "Debt free" (other than the mortgage). I will not be able to attain it this year, but if I am very careful this year, I should be able to get there in 2 or three. The other thing I want to do is de-clutter my life; both of things and complicated people. I spend too much time sorting through crap I don't need. Can't join you in the ship yards though, I need to be here for my kids so I work while they are at school.

I hear you. I did the same, and not wanting to work away from home while the kids were in school so I could be here when they got home. I've come full circle though. Kids are 20 and 22 even though I would like to be here still for the 20 year old as he deals with his disability but maybe DVR (vocational rehab) can find him work. I am planning on still keeping the farm going so maybe I can hire him to do more farm work. Only problem is he tends to need supervision but who knows what the future will hold. Maybe the best year yet for us all.

I was bummed about our mortgage. We had a 15 yr and it was going to get paid off by the time we were 60 then a large church account dropped us about 3 years ago due to economy and lack of tithes. They organized church volunteers to do it but we had to refi to a new 30 year. Crap. You think you got it all worked out then the bottom falls out.

Keep at it. You will get there. Two or three years goes by fast! And the clutter! Going to work on that big time. Need to lighten my load for lots of reasons! And being selective of the complicated people? I'm embracing numbers 13 and 14 of Jenbirds quote.

I'm doing the same. Trying to get everything cleaned up before the next run of rain. This warm weather I am enjoying but makes me realize we will still need more cold for all these dormant plants and trees. I see some are wanting to start new growth already! We really need some cold weather but at least we still have over 2 months of winter left.

While I am sure that will be a big task. Be thankful that you have opportunity. Just before my Grandma died her neighbors changed her Atty. and her will. They got everything. Now I would have liked to get some but mostly I was upset that these people that Grandma and I trusted took advantage of her and also disposed of any and all family items like photo's etc that had no value to anyone else.

but we had to refi to a new 30 year. Crap. You think you got it all worked out then the bottom falls out.

You probably already know this but maybe it will help someone else reading this.............

Even if it's $5.00 a month add what ever you can to your payment.
It may say 30 year but you yourself can change that by additonal payments.
When you get in position next few years to refi again go for the 20 or 15.
If you can't get in position to refi then stick with additional payments.

Trust me. Rates will still be low.
This is economy going to take mininum 6 years to even begin to clear out the forclosures sitting there right now and the ones to come in next few years.

My family has the wine shop - Vino Aquino in Tacoma. We are a small winery, geared towards folks making their own wine, so the only wine we carry is what we make in our shop, with the exception of a couple of reds that we import from Eastern WA in 60 gallon barrels, then bottle and put our label on the wine. Our space isn't large enough to keep a good inventory of aged reds so this is why we bring in bulk wine from the east side of the mountains.

Sometime soon this year, we will be offering space to those who want to make their own wine from kits. Customer purchases the kit, then using our equipment will be able to make 30 bottles of wine as we walk them though all steps. It's a 6 week process from start to finish. Couldn't be any easier for newbies to wine making who don't want to do it at home themselves.

SO, I'm afraid I won't be able to help you with any specific wines CL, unless it's one of ours! I'd invite you to stop by the shop one day while you're in town and do all the sampling you'd like at no charge. We carry about 15 different varieties and most everyone finds something new they enjoy. Keep us in mind if you'd like personalized labels, (maybe with your own artwork?) as a gift.

Good luck finding the wines you'd like for your Dad - I'm sure he'll appreciate it!

One caveat, make sure the bank knows it is for PRINCIPAL! We did this a few years back and they applied it to monthly payments (including interest), so that at the end of the year we didn't have to pay for December, but it still hadn't reduced out principal. We called the bank and made them change it for upcoming payments.

When we cleaned the ancestral home in Waco there were five garbage sacks of unused McDonald's napkins and almost $500 in pocket change on the floor. I keep trying to use the memory of those very bad ten days to motivate my DH to get rid of stuff but it doesn't work very consistently. All empathy for the un-hoarding process!

At least I'm not an only child. I won't have to do it alone.

Excellent point and a good reminder for me. I myself tend to hold onto possessions long past their usefulness and since I have a one and only DD, have promised her that I would clean a good amount of this cr** out of our too large home long before she has to move her elderly Dad and me to a smaller place. I told her not to thank me until it's done, otherwise she'll just be cursing me for a good long while.

Hallerlake. Sometimes the process of letting go is just not fun. A good (and tidy) friend of mine keeps reminding me "Our best memories are kept safe in our minds, not in things".

We have a 30, but I do the 1/2 payment every 2 weeks so that makes an extra full payment per year. We also paid extra each month for 5 additional full payments. I am going to stop that, pay down or pay off the plastic thing that I keep in my wallet instead and then go back to paying the house down fast. It would be nice not to have that big debt. I'm almost done paying for the car... we bought the van cash a few years before I got the Pilot but the van lost its transmission in front of a used car dealership when we were driving home from vacation in California, so we had no options open to us when we got the Pilot. It has been a good car and much better in the snow than the van was.
