sure wish the chickens could/would eat moss ... it's green ...
both the spongy stuff in what we would like to call a yard, and the thicker stuff that grows on, and falls off, the trees
not to mention the lichen that's growing on our balcony railings ...
yes, I know, lime would kill the first mentioned, and the second could be cultivated for a Japanese moss garden ...
while the third could be pried off and dried, and used for aeration in potted plants' soil
I went out to close the chickens in today, when it looked dark and stormy; they told me emphatically that they were NOT ready to go into the coop yet, so I picked off a bunch of snowberries and rose hips; they just loved those ...
all the grass and weeds seem to be beaten down by the recent wind. rain, and hail; if I get ambitious I might go out with my dandelion digger and pry those up, since my pullets just love dandelion (for some reason, Roopert doesn't)
I need to cut back my sage bushes too, the chickens probably won't eat any of it, but it will give the run floor a nice smelling layer, and the dried stalks will give them a nicer underfoot to walk upon, than the somewhat damp dirt .... in that last storm surge, the tarp developed a sag and dumped a whole lot of rainwater just in front of their pop door ...
I need to research, also, to see if chickens should eat pistachios ... several someones got me too many bags recently (if you eat too many, your intestines rebel) ... so I have several partial bags of them which are not as tasty as they were when really fresh ...

A dismal 4 eggs yesterday. Today 16! Yikes. Gotta get me some new customers pretty darned soon.
Went out to put fresh straw down in the coop, and got the tractor stuck in the pasture (not really a tractor, one of those ride on mowers with a cart behind it for the feed and straw) So then I had to find a tarp for it, and no bungees so had to get some big bricks.
Went into the basement to check on the new Cornish girls (in quarantine), and there was water everywhere. Seems like we got a leak in one of the brooder pens (empty of birds) and I can't find it. Needless to say, hubby had to work late so I found a big pan and put it underneath and hope he comes home early enough to fix it.
Time to head into the kitchen to put the goat leg on (with garlic and rosemary roast taters, Brussels sprouts, corn and gravy)
Maybe I'll have a spritzer to cheer me up.
