My son got it the day we went to the Chicken Show in December. He puked all night long. It did not recurr for him, but DD has had it 3 times since, I had it over the holidays, but I did not puke - It started suddenly. I had a dentist appointment on Dec 23, and was just fine, 2 hours later I suddenly felt as if I was going to puke, but I held it and became much sicker. DH was puking Dec 21 - Dec 23rd. A family that stayed with us just before I got sick all came down with it. Those that puked felt just fine before and after, but the kids are still puking nearly 2 weeks later. They never feel it coming. The mom did not puke, but like me she got horrible cramps, fever, chills, nausea, and extreme fatigue.

I would hate to be a school bus driver, a school nurse, and most of all, a school janitor.

yes one of the theories is that we have eliminated all of the natural parasites from out bodies, they have done clinical trials with the worm thing, it looks promising but not enough people gain remission if you ask me. there is no cure, it will always be there. I considered it, but nope, not swallowing any worms that I am aware of. Ginger has also shown in trials to reduce and block inflammation but again, does not gain remission or cure. cedars sinai has done some complete bone marrow transplants for those with big bucks, essentially replacing the immune system and so far no recurrence on the successful transplant. it takes months and millions to accomplish that one.

The radio show on PBS had such an awesome story of hookworms...quite amazing...
In the Civil War days, most folks used a bush to do their duty...and so hook worms flourished.
In the days, folks were largely barefoot, and getting close to the pile was a no no...so they'd go potty a few feet from the pile...
So scientists tried to figure out how people were newly infected when they did not go near the pile...and so they took hookworm larvae, and stuck them in a sandbox, and after 1 day the worms had crawled out of the original spot & went 1 -2 feet a day...after 4 days the larvae came to settle in about 5 feet from the "pile" so as to be in a perfect spot for those new Americans who did not venture close to the "pile"
Privies can to be in the 20s & 30s and stopped alot of hookworm infestations, although they are very previlent in Africa & other developing countries.
Fascinates me how this parasitic worm can move where it knows we will be.
The sewer systems we have today pretty much killed off the hookworm infestation we had in the old days.

And chains of lympatic tissue throughout the body, down legs, under arm pits tonsils & down the neck..all chains of lymph glands.
Spleen included.
Bone marrow only makes red blood cells.there is no way to take out & replace one's total immune system.
You can drug it down, but cannot take out & replace it.
We are stuck with it.

I am glad I just can not eat gluten!!!!

I will have to go find the guys story for you CL, it explains it better than I . no you can not replace the entire immune system, but you can apparently get rid of most of it and reset it. it was a long journey for this guy, but it was do it or die according to him. he is one of very few that it has helped.

But aren't hookworms a bad parasite in that is has very uncomfortable symptoms, etc? Not going to say the words.

Chickie, as far as winter growing in high tunnels you need to check out Elliot Colemans 'The Winter Harvest Handbook'. It's his methods for winter growing that I'm going to follow. He grows produce year round in Maine.
