Well, I am calling it a day.
Closed coops and it is absolutely blizzarding here !!!
Coming right off the Pacific RIGHT AT US !!!!

Oh well, stay safe guys !
Pray no power outages.
I have 22 baby chicks under a brooder...awful hard to keep them warm if the power goes out.
Easier to warm eggs !

Course we have a generator...just in case.
If we can find it under the snow.
We have a 5 gallon propane tank that runs our cook stove, and it was getting buried, and ice stuck all over the screws, etc so I had DH cover it up.
Got water saved if your power goes out & you are on a well ?

Hope U are all prepared !
Food, water & blankets in cars, and carry sand or 3 tab roofing sections to get traction if you get stuck.Vaseline
the rubber seals around car doors so they do not freeze...carry WD-40 in your purse or pocket, handwarmers, extra coats & gloves.

1996 was the ice storm. Mom died (not as a result of) the first day of it.

OK, I have some good news for a change. Slightly bragging too. In order to apply for employment with the shipyards you need to pass an accuplacer test. There are 2 levels. A basic Helper Program (which was my intention) and a more advanced Apprenticeship program. You are tested in Reading Comprehension, Sentence skills and Math. I took the accuplacer today and passed well above what is required to apply for the Apprenticeship! Much higher starting pay and pay raises and paid education! So, we'll see what happens at the job fair next week. Wish me luck.

Stumpfarmer, that reminds me of 1985 when I was at the time the ranch manager's "ol lady" on a sheep/cattle ranch in Glide OR.....the new owner, new to critters as well, had bred all the ewes way too early.
And we have a bunch of lambs born in the pasture of snow...steamers we called them.
There was one ranch hand after another bringing ME the little shivering lambs.
The ewes walked away, the lambs too cold to follow.
I had to rub them up & made a baricade around the woodstove in the dining room so the little guys would not get burned on the stove...and sat there feeding them, 6 or 8 in all.
bee bees all over the floor........

One guy dropped off a 50# milk replacement & some bottles..........

All my towels covered in sheep grease LOL

CR have you done your twice annual speel on heat lamps ?
Just in case anyone is trying to heat animals or coops ???

This is a heat lamp, it has a white heavy ceramic base & BIG cord.
It can take the heat.
I use heavy vineyad wire to loop the light to the ceiling etc. so a flying bird CANNOT knock it to the ground.

Ok, I've decided to "create" a HERITAGE breed of chicken and sell it for one million bucks. Then I shall share all the money with my BYC buddies so we can buy all the chickens we need.

Well, if you can re-create a breed from one single Rooster, then you should be able to create anything you want with a few more. And do a better job because you have more genes in the pool ergo better gene diversity.

Well, I guess it can be done! (and they were only using "somewhat similar" hens.)
