LOL, I was asking because I didn't know how long it takes to make wine, start to finish! A year? I guess I can google it.

Oh no...in the case of wine grapes, fermentation is usually done & over with in about 7 days if I remeber correctly, then you strain, clarify & bottle.
The aging is what takes time, but the alcohol is already there at 7 days.
I have idiot firneds make wine & found them drinking it at 8 days.........I scolded them to allow it to age & mellow but it did no good.

This is what you do:
Wash, stem & crush, strain out seeds as they can be bitter in the wine.
In the case of reds, skins & juice go in a clean vat & add Campa tabs to kill all other natural yeast, then after that (next day) brix, see how much sugar there is naturally & add if needed...then test acid, if acid is needed add, then the yeast & cover with a cheescloth & stir 2-3x a day.
when it is fermenting it bubbles & smells soooooooooo good !
When fermentation is done, the bubbles all gone, brix test again to see if there is sugars left, if none, that means all sugars have been turned to alcchol (& that can be measured too)
Time to add clarifyer (in whites) and allow the sediment to sink, then sulfites to preserve (must be done) and bottle with as little air injected as possible..all total, a week or week & 1/2 ?

Steel Winery in Lake County one of my hangouts where I sold alot of artwork

Cannot even tell you how wonderful a winery smells!

So I just had a dip-moment.
I said I wouldn't do it but I did.
I have been saving Black javas & Buckeye eggs for 2 buyers and then over this storm my hens just slowed so far down I cannot collect a doz of each in 6 days.I wanted t
o also send extras.
So I had 9 Javas & 7 Buckeyes and just figured we'd have an $80 omelet for breakfast...then I put them in the refrigerator, for about 45 minutes...then just spasd out and stuck them in the incubator.
Why not?
Seriously, what difference does it make if I have 20 juvenile Bucks in spring or 14 ?
nada.
Incidently, Just herd my Buck cockerel's full brother (and the hens) won both BB, BV & champion and champion American....in GA last week (see Buckeye thread)
The uncanny part is how much this bird looks like my Alpha man, BUCK...what a lame name. Both
have really full breasts...big & meaty big guys.
If I can, I will post the pic of the brother here.

Im BACK!!! 48 hours and still no power. I just got the pc hooked up to generator. Gawd, I want my lights!
What a nightmare. I had several 100 eggs in the bator ready to hatch and the power went out Wed. I had to bring all eggs in from outside and all chicks. I lost several young seramas from outside because I didnt have heat. I have boxe all over the house. Got the generator going and then a few hours after it started it died. I was by myself with the kids and had to deal with it. I have had eggs in my pockets and shirt for 2 days now and most hatched. Today I went to get gas for the generator and left the hatching eggs by the fire and got home and my dog had a meal of hatching chicks. I wanted to kill him! CR has been awesome. He has put up with me texting at all hours. I can read all byc stuff but cant reply with the new system on my phone so I caould see what was going on. You are all great folks here and care and help each other. That is so so so cool. Im in the dark and its hard to see the keyboard so sorry if bad spelling. I talked to Jen this am and she is out of power too. We are now told it will be tues. or wed. I am going to check in later when needed. Hope all are well, safe and warm!

Anna

After all that the dog got them! I'd want to kill him, too!

My dad and john agreed to let me have them stick eggs in the incubator for the next few days (they should be fertile from the roosters and any genes of them guys is better than none)
problem, eggs collected are frozen.... and tonight they can't get down the driveway to go to the coop.... -sigh- that and mom doesn't want the incubator started up.... but if Dad is on board....... since he takes care of my birds for me then his support is better than none.... that and if i have too many i can sell them in my area..... and there is the *small* chance that i have pure crosses... just need to talk to mom tonight after dinner and work on persuading her.... the incubator is dummy proof and i haven't messed with the thermostat since last summer. should work fine.

This be " Toony" one of our Easter Eggers. She is most colourful, being almost completely white when she was younger, then the lovely smatterings of grey like someone waved a dripping paint brush at her. Now, she has stolen some of the ruddy red coloring from Rose, and has changed out some of her grey bits for this charcoal black colouring, she is very beautiful! Just ask her.
