Question for you all. We usually use coffee chaff in our coop and nest boxes (free from our local roaster) but we ran out, so I purchased some pine shavings. Most of my birds have never seen pine shavings before - and they think it is food. I caught them eating the few scraps that blew around the yard which didn't concern me that much...but when they go in the coop at night I see them eating quite a bit. They'll munch some food and then munch some of the pine shavings.

Is this terrible for them? Do your birds eat the pine shavings in their coop?

Thanks for any input!!!

Hello, brand new here to Backyardchickens.com :) Had chickens growing up and now I am the proud mother of a 4 yo that has a strong interest in raising them. So of course, I'm ok with that! We have two, three day old Lavendar Orpingtons and are avidly researching the other breed we want to add to the brooder. On the list..... Barred Rock, BLRW, Jubilee Orp, Buff Orp and RIR. I also had an amazing little Silkie growing up so would love to add one to the bunch eventually :)

If any of you Washingtonians close-ish to Everett are hatching any of these soon, let me know!!! I'm just looking for quality friendly chicks that will be loved in the family :)

Hello and Welcome!!! I just locked down some BLRW's tonight that should hatch on Sunday. Not sure yet if I'll have any to spare, but I will probably be hatching all spring, so let me know how many chicks you are looking for and I can probably hook you up! PM me or look me up on Facebook at Storybook Poultry and message me there.

Cloverleaf, those buff babies are GORGEOUS!!!!!!

We've had 5 serama's hatch out yesterday and today, and I see a 6th that has a big pip looks like it's just started zipping. Nothing on the other 4. Just locked down our BLRW & Marans for another hatch day on Sunday!!

Spent all day cleaning brooders and doing the teenage shuffle! Going to soak my weary back in the tub!!! G'Night all!

I had my chicks on pine shavings to begin with, and they ate quite a bit of them, so I switched them over to an adult incontinent pad in the brooder (shavings didn't seem to HURT them but I worried)

these days I have been throwing a bunch of the fallen fir branches into the run, so the chickens can walk on those rather than the somewhat damp dirt there -- they usually attack the branches and munch like crazy on the fir needles and the cones if there are any ... I've seen them pick up the smaller branches and run away with them, with others chasing .... :weee :cd

smart remark surfaced in my brain -- feed them termites or carpenter ants .... :lau then they could digest the cellulose ....

I use shredded paper (mostly from junk mail envelopes) in the nest box -- they eat the paper too, sometimes, but it hasn't bothered them at all that I can see, over the course of several months
