The pay stinks! $10 per hour! I don't think I made so little since I was in college in the mid 80's!!!! A huge drop from working as a molecular biologist, but I look it as being paid a small stipend to get educated. Next year I get commissions. I hear that our office does not earn uch in commissions. We do too many free 1040EZ and lower priced returns for senior citizens, so no one wants to work out here. I have not found that to be the case. I had my first retiree today, air-force pension and several other retirement accounts, and a huge schedule A due to all his wife's medical expenses. It was not a cheap return. Mostly I have been doing single parents getting EIC; also not a cheap return. Second peak is all the day traders and people who owe, that starts the last week of March and lasts through the filing deadline. People have been passing my card to their friends too, so I have had no problems finding clients. I've not needed to do any marketing. Surprisingly, I like the job. I meet a lot of interesting people, and just a few I feel are taking advantage of the system. It's the e-mails I'm getting from Alex's teachers about him not completing assignments, my neglected house and neglected yard that stress me out. Oh, and chicken poop.
I want to know how welfare works - I find it alarming when someone who appears to be perfectly capable of working can get hundreds in housing assistance and hundreds more in WIC, and a hard-working single mom who works full time and goes to college full time in an effort to pull herself up gets only $75 per month in WIC and no housing assistance. She has student loans to pay for schooling and uses some to help with household expenses. I would much rather my tax dollars go to the college student mom who is working so hard to get by han the chain-smoker who's milking the system.
I no longer feel the burn from the bourbon ... I can drink it straight. I think my jaw will be fine in the morning.
