Look at this picture my sister posted on facebook. The man sitting down is MY DAD! He helped develop the FIRST personal computer. OMG, I never knew that. We were very young then and even when we were older at the time he died we still didn't have a computer in the house and he had been working on some other computer thing Home computers were still years away. Wow, no wonder my High School aptitude test put computer programmer at the top of the list. I remember when I shared the results of that test with him I said "no way". I could never sit in an office all day everyday. Dad never said a word. He already knew that and why he started a ranch several years before. I really miss him.

That's cool!

I took one of those tests in HS too, only mine came back with "fighter pilot", so I did not put much stock in it. #2 was "college proffessor", that may have been enjoyable.

Yup, they are meat birds...and their body cavity does not grow as fast as their meat.
So the liver, kidneys & heart remain smallish compared to the enormous amount of flesh they will develop.
We raise ours as soon as the weather gets decent, since the Cornish X has few feathers.
They went out on free range & were therefore forced to eat grasses.
I then fed them a scoop of feed mornings & a scoop evenings consisting of Flockraiser or similar 20 % protein or higher.
As they develope more flesh, faster than average laying birds, these Cornish need a higher % protein feed.
To keep them lean & active, I rationed their feed intake & removed the feeder after 20 minutes, otherwise the gluttons will park their butts at the feeder 24/7 and never move out of their own poo.
Our birds dressed very nicely with much tender felsh and hardly any fat and fantastic flavor no commercial poultry has, that due to the free range.
So, end of March, we get out 50 "CornBalls" and raise them in the brooder til about mid April when I can no longer stand the poopy dudes...and out they go to a "grow out" pen with high soft new spring grasses.
At 8 weeks we butcher most all but smallish cockerels.
At 10 weeks we butcher the hens.
Good eating all year long.

DO any of you take orders? I want about 15 or so, freezer ready.

Even though they were not that meaty, we really liked the young roosters we bought from Scott (patriot feed). They were the tastiest chickens we've ever eaten.

It will be about end of April middle of May area for me, and 15 is not enough !!

KMoran: If you were not at the other end of our WA universe from me....I'd have you come down to participate in a "Freezer Camp Day" where you can witness & learn butchering techniques.
But your dinners will be ready far earlier than that.

I'll be waiting for your Freezer Camp Day I think. Maybe I can swing going. I've done three birds now, but I just don't think I'm doing it efficiently. I'd like to see how it should be done.

Just thought I would pop in and say hi. My flock got smaller today. I sold my light Sussex pair, and 3 Silkies chicks, plus 2 of the mutt hens. I think I am down to only 12 or 13 hens in the coop and run. I also still have the Porcelain Silkie in the brooder with the newer chicks. I have 7 healthy and growing Silkie chicks. I am hoping that 3 of them may be Porcelain. I am wanting a Porcelain roo to breed back to my hen.

I am also looking for some Sicilian Buttercup hens. I now have room in the coop and run for some smaller hens.
