Oh no not me thank goodness I only lost two. But I am reading this thread called They'er here ( with a lot of e's) and this lady ordered chicks from Murry Mcmurry. Originally she ordered 33 chicks and 17 died, she got her replacement shipment today and out of 51, 22 are already dead and she has only had them like 6 hours. Another lady posted that she got 44 today and lost 12 with in a few hours. And another lady lost a bunch her first batch got her second one today and lost 3. ( how sad is that. I would be bawling my eyes out.

We had the same thing happen about 3 yrs ago. Ordered 60+ birds, over half were dead. They send the replacements, over 30, therre was only ONE chick peeping in the box when DH picked it up at the PO. We went thru the box one by one and manage to salvage 2 more who were pretty lifeless, but once they warmed up they came to life and were fine.

That was our last order. We bought our first incubator after that and hatch our own out now. For some reason, having hatching eggs shipped to me that don't hatch doesn't bother me as much as having a box of dead chicks mailed to me!!!!

I do think it had to do with having them shipped in Feb. If I ever did it again, I'd wait until April at least!

Well, it WAS nice out, and I moved juvie birds 1 brooder pen over (no more heat lamp) and cleaned the baby pen to oust the last batch of baby babies...needed new shavings so I went out to the van, slid the side door open, and went to get the bale of shavings out, and it was oh so dark !
Then suddenly (without warning as the talking heads always say ! )

HAIL !!!!!!!!!!
hail bigger than a pea, almost marble sized & went on for 10 minutes !
ICY cold outside now & the entire ground is white with marbles !

I snapped a few pics...and waited it out.
When it was over DH came in (from his tin roofed Man Cave) and said it was so loud he could not hear his phone ring or anyone should they have yelled.

Then he said, "Did you leave the door of the van open ?
Cuz there is 2" of hail inside there now"

Yup, when I did the old lady "run" back indoors I left that door open !

got six blue-green eggs from my friend Ruth, yesterday, to put under the broody hen .. yes, that chicken's more than a year old so she's a hen now

we will see, eventually, I hope == if any of them hatch, if any of them are pullets, if any of them inherit the blue egg gene, and whether those also inherit the brown-overlay gene

I suppose we will also find out if she is REALLY broody, or only faking it

we are pretty much STUCK here in the house, the insurance company still hasn't gotten our required authorization card to us, so we cannot get license plates for the cars until that arrives; supposedly it was airmailed to us on the EIGHTH !!! but still not here

was supposed to be coming from San Diego but when we checked yesterday to see what was going on, they said it was coming out of the CONNECTICUT office

we should have insisted upon FedEx Overnight delivery, we've been here more than a week now with NO transport (other than the runs-every-two-hours bus (stop is a hike up a very steep hill) and the charity of friends

ok... i am still not getting email updates to new posts.... grrr.... maybe its something in my main settings and not this thread setting... cause i have it set to notify immediately...

later this week i plan to run an experiment on myself.
I am going to go to a friends house. scratch my arms and put fresh avocado on my arm and eat a slice.
last week for no reason, hours after making guacamole i broke out in hives for 10 minutes. freaked me out. that was the only symptom. no itchy mouth, and i don't remember having any digestion issues.
then last night my sister posted on facebook that she is allergic, cause she made an avocado mask and her face broke out (course i think the purpose of face mask's is to draw out the gunk, which causes it to break out) but she said her face was red and itchy and she was itchy everywhere....
in the past year or so i have started to like guacamole.... and people tell me to eat better so i decided to make guacamole here as a healthy snack (which it didn't turn out well tasting, need my mexican friend to make it, theirs is addicting)

So i am curious about how this experiment will turn out. i will have benedryl on hand just in case....
but has anyone every heard of being allergic to fresh avocados, but not guacamole?

I have never been allergic to food... I am not allergic to latex, I work in a lab and am surrounded and use the gloves (i think the gloves are latex, i will have to test that too)

Well, I am home & catching up & ready to watch the dog show !
And had a great time at TotalClours' home as she hosted lunch !!

So good to see you all again!
AND the reason for the meet was hatching eggs I brought back from OR from Cloverleaf to go to WA4-HPoultryMom...and WINE corks I got from a friend (tons of them !) given out to all for crafts...and as usual we had so much food !!!!!
I'll tell you all what: I thought I was the queen of fences...for poultry protection...But TotalColour has it all !
And it is all electrified, even the rabbit cages areas..........
A lovely place, with pond.
And quiet for being in the city....and a sense of peace at her home & grounds.

I finally got the LG at a stable temp last night before going to bed. Realized it was two out of my 3 thermometers needed to be reset. Seemed they were both stuck at 96 something where my On the Spot was reading 103!!! It stayed stable all night so I popped in all the eggs this morning!

This is what is cooking:
5 Bantam Salmon Faverolles
3 test eggs from my lavender splits bantam cochin pen
6 test eggs from my lavender cuckoo Olive Egger pen
9 Marans eggs
15 BLRW eggs

I may throw a few more test eggs in if I get any today too.

If the hatch goes well, I will have extra BLRW chicks if anyone wants any let me know. I may also have extra Olive Eggers also. They should hatch a week before the Monroe show.
