Um a lot were DOA. The second batch she got she opened it up and she said their were bodies everywhere. The rest died with in a few days. The first batch she got was a week ago. She got the second batch today. The other ones were the same many DOA or very week and die shortly after. Very sad here is the thread if anyone wants to read it. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/626647/theyre-heeeeeeereeeee#post_8364072

That is so sad. I think they should not send chicks until the weather warms up - poor little things! The USPS seems to be slower than ever at delivering mail lately.

I haven't really asked about how my birds are for fear of depressing news.... mom complains how they are eating $300 a month..... which is odd because i have half the flock i used to.... but there is nothing for them to free range so they are pigging out.

Check for rats and squirrels and other thieves. When we had the snow out in the yard, I did not open the run doors, so there were not squirrels and sparrows and other pests stealing the food. I went through a lot less food than I am going through now since chickens are free-ranging again. The chickens are eating less food, but the squirrels and other creatures that can get n the coop and run when the doors are left open are eating a lot more!

When only my chickens can access the food, I go through 50 pounds of food per week with 38 chickens (32 LF, 6 bantam). It will last a lot longer if I give them plenty of table scraps. When the run-doors are ope, 50 pounds will last 5 days at most. That is about $68 to $85 in food per month full-price, and I believe food is a bit cheaper where you are. I don't know how many chickens you have, but $300 sounds very high. That is about $120 higher than my dog food bill.

Another beauty of having one of God's perfect heads (bald) keeps people guessing. Rather than one with a bunch of which gives way too many clues.

Sounds like you've got a great group of eggs in your bator, and I hope to see you at the Monroe show.
Oh and so many lavender birds...makes sense, since you like purple so much!

CL, FlyRobin, WA4-H,

glad you all could make it yesterday. I would have invited everyone, but this was my FIRST event here, and wanted to make sure I got it right! Next time we'll have a ton of folks. It'll be even nicer when the weather warms up and we can sit on the verandah and sip iced tea, beers or whatever.

Oh, and thanks for the eggs - going to set them this weekend.

Weather was lovely, until suddenly it is not. Must be from CL's place. Got to go into town and get stuff - uugh!

BTW, FRF, those tiny blue eggs, Bantam Aruacana's? or Ameraucanas?

Bantam Ameraucanas, from CloverLeaf.

Thank you again for having us!

sigh.. anyone have any cheap eggs? I just lost 2 batches of eggs...
1 due to my bumping the incubator and well... crash testing eggs is a bad idea.
2 due to bad shipping/packing 16 broken on arrival and the rest look pretty bad (detached aircells, porous shells etc) they are in the bator but not much hope.
that is 90% of my egg money gone and no chicks to show.

Oh no Rainwolf, that's awful! I'm sorry, but I don't have any fertile eggs.
