To Rare Feathers Farm: hey, the worst thing yo can do is leave the board. That is giving some idiot CONTROL OVER YOU and that is nonsense. People like that need to be completely ignored and forgotten as quickly as possible. Only YOU can give that person power over what you do - and that's just a silly thing to do. What kind of people do you want DIRECTING YOUR LIFE? Good, kind, intelligent ones or assclowns like the one who wrote you?

Mamma Carla, I have one acre: 6' solid board fence around the whole thing, 7 pit bulls and one patterdale terrier on patrol... needless to say I have never lost a bird to any land mammal... but owls? OMG. It gets so bad that I have to keep a dog right out there in the pen with the young birds. Around here any chick that doesn't go in at night is dead. I've been told to get those red lights, a fake owl, etc. Haven't been able to afford them yet, just rely on the dogs. Maybe you could get a good, chicken safe dog to "babysit" the birds during the day?

Carla. Have you used Blue Kote on your birds wounds? This will normally stop the picking on her and allow her to go back right away. Sometimes longer they are gone harder it is to go back no matter if wounds or not. Chickens can be just as bad as people.

Hi all - I am in Issaquah with some backyard chickens since July. I have gotten so much great info from these forums and have just discovered this thread of locals. It is very long and reading just the last few pages it seems like you guys know each other pretty well. I wish I would have seen this one about two weeks ago when I felt totally alone after an eagle attack. Though I have found great info here and a couple of people that have been really helpful.

My chickens have a great coop and an enclosed run that is fairly small in my opinion but bigger than many suggest. We have surrounded that all with an electric fence that we put on at night and whenever we are not around. Up until recently we have let our chickens out to raom while we are home but haven't really watched them closely at all.

Well apparently we are now under attack and everyone is on lockdown because of this young eagle. i have created a chicken hospital in my garage and my chicken (about 10 months old) has come back from deaths door (or so I thought) and she is doing great - has actually laid two eggs after 15 days "in hospital." She has a long way to go until her wounds are healed and she can return to her "flock" (five total lol) but she so wants to be with them but they peck her if we let her hang out with them at all. I am having a custom chicken coat made in hopes she can hang with them again soon hahahaha.

I have 2 acres but they only really roam on less than one of them - what are people doing around here about birds of prey?? is there a season? Previously we had let them roam about from about 12 until 3 or 4 every day unsupervised and they loved it. Will we ever be able to do that again?

I will subscribe to this forum by daily digest to look for answers but it does seem pretty busy so if you have any thoughts for me feel free to ask for my e-mail and we can chat that way if needed. Obviously I am new here so don't really know how this works.

Rare Feathers Farm - I don't know you personally but, I have read many of your posts. Please don't let one imbecile drive you away. There is no end to the sourpuss people that only get enjoyment out of making others miserable.

I frequent the auctions etc. and I saw that "highfaultin" comment when it first was made. I was fuming when I read it and it wasn't even directed at me. - My response would NOT have been mild.

When I was much younger I wrote articles for a (dog)breed magazine. One such article hit someone much too close to home- I didn't even know this person but, her response was "If i cut your articles in pieces and fed it to my dogs, they would never get heartworm." My response was to fold up like a card table, dissolve in tears and decide never to write again." My mentor told me I needed to grow thicker skin. I didn't even know what that meant but, many lovely people(like now on BYC) told me how much my writing meant to them etc. I eventually got over it.

Now that I am an old fart with the hide of a rhineocerus, I DO NOT suffer fools. I would have blasted your antagonist back to his/her heck hole. As they say on this thread "we have your back."

I will times this a 3rd time. I love Blue Kote. My Yorkies in the past have molested at least 2 of my hens. I was able to return them back to the flock, even though the nasty little dogs had pulled out almost all their feathers on their backs. I still have a hen that is funny looking because the Blue Kote has stained her cream colored feathers purple. I had had people think that she is a special king of chicken. They didn't know that a chicken could be purple.

Problem with Trolls is they thrive on being antagonistic and blasting them only fuels them more... I've learned a long time ago to just ignore them.

Well, it's 230am and yea, I can't sleep!! My hip is killing me and the meds haven't kicked in yet!! So, just caught up on the posts and maybe i'll be tired in a few minutes!! Miss you guys!!

I am very sympathetic about waking up at night in pain. I also completely understand about hip pain. I no longer have any comfortable position in the bed. If your hips hurt there is no way to sleep comfortably. It doesn't help when my shoulders hurt also. I wish I knew why my hips hurt. I haven't had any injuries. The hip pain started when I was exercising at a Curves gym. I keep being told to exercise, but it makes me crazy when it causes more chronic pain. I do a lot of stretching, just to keep my body from seizing up. I used to get down on the floor and did some sit ups, but with the nasty little puppies around I can't bring myself to lay down on the floor. I am having a hard time keeping up with all the puddles. I can't wait until the weather gets nicer and I can train them to go outside to pee. I also need to find them homes. lol
