I brooded my Maui chicks on lots and lots of pulled-up weeds and weedy grass, they loved it, and there wasn't much dust

my Yelm chicks got an adult incontinence pad on the bottom, covered by fallen fir branches, and there again, not much dust (I had tried them out on commercial chips but they kept eating those, and those WERE dusty

now I get to sit on my hands and hope that the broody hen STAYS broody; we slipped six blue-green EE eggs under her on Tuesday and so far so good.

I do hope your girl stays broody! Wanted to tell you also - our little Camo (one of your grandchicks) was in the coop checking out the nestboxes. There was one egg that might have been hers from a few days ago - a very light blue that we haven't seen before here. (Although I was expecting a khaki or olive?) Keeping an eye out - will let you know =)

a couple of my girls produce a light blue-green egg; and we are hoping/assuming that Roopert is also carrying the blue egg gene; could be that pretty silvery pullet got the blue egg gene WITHOUT the brown-overlay gene ... if so how very very cool .. :jumpy

I know when Dana was picking out which eggs she wanted to put under her broody, she was choosing the bluer or lighter green eggs; so likely your girl is from Deirdre, Christina, or Anitra's egg ... since it's Ginger who lays pink and Becky who lays olive drab/khaki, and Phoebe's tend to be mossy green

Well, I woke to DD screaming hyterically this a.m. as she plopped her bloodied rooster in my bed!

Seems Little Rascal, the Bantam Cochin we bought from Heather last year is losing his status as King of the Coop. I have 3 other Bantam Cochin roosters that I bought as chicks from CGG. I had tried to give them away last fall when I saw they were cockerals, but found now takers. They are gorgeous, and until a few days ago, they all got along just fine.

Rascal appeared quite bloodied, and looked humiliated and was drooping his head. Olivia was hysterical and thought he was going to die. I'm glad to say he cleaned up just fine in just a couple of minutes, though he does have a good-sized gash at the base of his comb that was bleeding profusely. I got him some water, and he dunked nearly his hole head in when he drank. He now looks a lot better. It washed all the blood that had dripped onto his waddles. He perked right up, and is enjoying his new status as "house chicken" marching around with his tail up, and even coming to the breakfast table to beg for pancake scraps like a dog. I think his ego was injured far more than his comb.

soooo does anybody want 3 beautiful Bantam Cochin Roosters? I will try and post some photos. They are stunning. One is fiesty (but not mean), another is a mellow sweetie and the third is somewhere inbetween.

last night??? its still here

Windy windy windy!

It was so windy here... [HOW WINDY WAS IT?] It was so windy that one of our hens laid the same egg three times!

Maybe you (like me) have had a target painted on yer back ! I know who put mine there and really feel sorry for them that they are so miserable that they need to do things like that.

I have so much to do around here. My son and his wife will be moving in with us in May so I have to move my soap making area, dog room/ Kitchen pantry/spare bedroom. I'm sure my poor husband is going to be so happy with my ideas'.
One of my milk rooms is going to be changed into a hatching room.
But you know that is what family does, its helps no matter what ( in my book)

Oh if anyone finds a cheap Little Tykes play house please let me know, I'm looking for one or two... Thanks.
