Good Morning Folks,
Today is hatch day.  I am wondering how long you let your incubator run before you decide that an egg is not going to hatch?  I thought I'd ask you folks, before I go sorting through threads.

I keep the incubator running for 2-3 days unless something happened like power outage, low temp, etc I add a extra day or 2 depending on how bad the issue was. BUT I run a incubator almost all the time when hatching..... so it normally is not a issue for me to keep a couple eggs in the hatching bator a couple extra days.

I let my hatches take two days from the time the first chick hatches.  Generally this is enough time.  If you do not have a candler, pick up the egg and tap it to see if you get a response.  Most times if the embryo is alive, it will peep.  If no peeping and everyone else is out, it means the egg is not viable.

Do you leave the hatched chicks in there for that long? After shrink wrapping a chick last time, I'm really nervous to open the incubator at all.

Chicks can last up to 3 days without food/water... but what I do is I pull the chicks once or maybe twice in a 24hr time frame. at the same time I add a half cup or cup of hot water to the water pan. The hot water jumps the humidity up and covers the quick open/grab chick time.

Hey guys! Audrey's napping....DH & I went out to breakfast--left Audrey with the grandparents...then we went to Wal-Mart and got a few things and DH is convinced that Audrey needs a "Gator" (Power Wheels). Although it does have a dump bed on it (that works) so she could clean her out coop! LOL :D

Thanks for all of the e-mails regarding my birds...I think I have the incubator and the Crevecoeur flock sold...as well as my bantam Houdan. I am still needing to part with a pair of Golden Laced Cochins and the mille fleur bantams as well as the Sussex. I'm hoping someone will buy them at the show, if they're not "pre-sold" first.

Other than that--my in-laws are thinking about getting back into cattle but they're set on the Scottish Highlands--anyone know anything about them???

I love Highland Cattle! I don't know much about them but if I ever get a farm I will be getting them and Black wool sheep :D to go with my chickens and dogs.

You could go on a WEEKS vacation and CR could stay up ALL night, and post and he still wouldn't catch chatty cathy. I mean chickielady

So with the DD gone !! that brings up  a little problem. "What to do with her bedroom???"  See, her bedroom was an old 10 ft X 23ft  lean-to on the back of the garage. My best friend and I turned it into a real cute little bedroom.   The DW wants to keep it as a spare bedroom.:rant I WANT to turn it into a CHICKEN coop  :thumbsup   :cd   just think how many MORE chickens I could get ????????? 30 maybe even 40 :thumbsup   Hey Chickielady fill up your bator with BUCKEYES ...  Now being the understanding and reasonable guy that I am.... I told the DW I would put a bed in the corner of the coop :thumbsup   she said NO WAY   :rant    I mean come on, Its NOT like I was going to put it right under the roost :plbb    the only one that would use the spare bed would be her twin sis and her hubby

Why are women so unreasonable ???:idunno  :bow

:yuckyuck

In all my excitment I forgot to mention that the DW has agreed to give up her ducks :ya   So if anyone would like two FREE  three year old  male magpie ducks... they are yours.

I will even throw in a Free bottle of BBQ sause  :thumbsup

I forgot to mention too that 12 out of the last 14 days the DW has found her way back here  in time for Dinner :rant

if having them for dinner is ok I can take them....
But if she wants them to go to a home and not a dinner plate then I can't do...

Also, I was reading my MIL's Hobby Farms Magazine this morning and found this:

They are really spendy but DH thinks he could build one for around $300 for my meaties.

There is a great article in Hobby Farms this month's issue (March/April 2012) on page # 68 DIY chicken tractor for meaties....it has step by step instructions and I doubt it would cost anywhere near $300.
We have alot of building scrap laying around here & plan to build one, if not two of them for meaties this spring.

CHICKEN 911

One of my Blue Ameracaunas sounds like sh'e breathing through a Kazzoo! I had to go somewhere with ALex this morning, so I asked Olivia to take care of the animals. She forgot to let the chickens out. They were locked in their coops with plenty of food, but no water until nearly 2pm. They all stuffed themselves and are walking around with huge crops. She was laying an egg in one of the nest boxes when I came in, so I first thought it was just a strange egg-song. She started laying only about a week ago, and she lays a really long, narrow pointy egg. Her first 2 eggs were bloody on the outside, but she seems to be past that now.

I picked her up and examined her, and other than a really full crop (I can feel all the food pellets), she does not seem to have any injuries, no nasal discharge or anything. I suspect she aspirated some of her food. Every once in a while she will hiccup, and shake her head or scratch at her neck. Other than that, she behaves like a chicken, though a bit slwer now as she is laboring to breathe. When I first opened the pop-doors, she ran into the covered run with all the rest of her flockmates, and then ran back in again with all of them when a bunch of snow dumped from one of the trees onto the roof. I brought 2 big bowls of water into the coop, and she rant to a bowl and drank. she still sounds bad though not as bad as she did before. Is tehre anything I can do to help her?

Well of course it would just be rude not to. Do they come in PINK ? ? ?
