Hey all, just checking in. Great to hear all the usual chicken chat!

Want you all to know that I think this is a great bunch of folks. The best on BYC! Sorry if I get a bit grouchy at times. It's not personal! I'm just a grouch these days but working on it. Thanks for being patient.

JB, your new babe is so lovable! I'm so happy for you. Give him a big hug for me.

I need a new puppy to love. Have 2 but need 3 or 4 or 5!!!!!!

This comes with a leather scaberd case, and 2 boxes of shells....so we bin shooting !
Funny the .22 does not bother the birds or dog, the 30-30 upsets them, and the cannon WinMag makes all run for cover LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!

i use the color zip ties on full grown birds... since as chickie said if they grow you have to replace as they grow...
I've started using a toe punch for chicks and that works wonderfully but they does not help to visually see the difference between 2 look alikes.
I use toe punch to tell pures from mixes and zip tie bands to tell em apart as adults.

Toe punch is way to hard to see in a herd of birdies on a hillside...or even in a brooder pen with 50 started birds in it all going NUTS cuz ya are trying to catch ONE of them........hard to get them to hold still & SPREAD their toeses out for ya.
Wire spirals (soft plastic spirals) are what I use, expand somewhat with growth so if you space off a little one's leg band (hey it can happen when you have so many!) they are OK.
Once they are grown, I use BIG spirals (various colors) and permenent brass (hey it rains here) bands with numbers.

Chickielady is right. If you put them on as chicks you will have to check them often because they grow fast. I didnt put ties on my girls until they lay.

I'm only putting them on grown hens. right now I just use a little colored paint on the tails of my white girls and white paint on my Australorp

Yes!

I know it is a good parents role to raise independent children, but YES, I do still find it somewhat satisfying when she still needs me! Crazy, isn't it?

I don't think it's crazy; after all, no matter how adult and on her own she is, you will still always be her mother and love and care for her.

It's a nice reminder of that relationship, and totally different than if she was constantly dependent on you.
