This is a really good informative article about heritage breeds. In my opinion, I believe you can have Heritage breeds that are also exhibition breeds. Exhibition breeds, are typcially bred for show. They are not highly productive egg birds nor are they meet birds. Like small bantams. Exhibition breeds are bred to match their standard written in the Standard of Perfection. But so are Heritage breeds. So they can easily cross over. But many folks think of Exhibition Breeds as those that aren't egg/meat birds. Their only purpose is for showing.

Ron, Did you find leg bands? I may have several extras. if you want them? Anna

Anyone know of any feeds stores in the area that carry leg bands??? I'm getting tired of spray painting the girls tails

A heritage breed is a breed that was recognized before the 60's.

An exhibition breed is one created for that purpose. They're rare and include breeds like Modern Games, Sultans, and Seramas.

Now, a heritage BIRD not breed is one that meets the ALBC definition, an exhibition bird not breed is one that is show quality. A heritage bird is the same as an exhibition one, but not all exhibition birds are heritage birds. A good quality Araucana is an exhibition bird, or can be, but is not a heritage bird or breed.

Regardless of SOP quality, all heritage breeds must be able to reproduce naturally, without human intervetion & artificial ensemination.....

I jumped the gun. Ginger is not broody. I gave her a bunch of Spitz eggs and a bunch of Brabanter eggs. Now, I don't know which ones are which. I can't sell them on craigslist. I either have to eat them, sell them as eating eggs, or borrow an incubator from someone. Does anyone not too far away have an incubator they could lend me? Please.

I can add them to my incubator... how many?

Both can be one of the same

1) a heritage breed is an OLD breed, pure & from long days ago if ya get my drift. heritage breeds are what was here when the country was founded, or breeds that were founded in other countries, such as the Marans breed of chicken is heritage from France.

2) Exhibition Poultry means that the birds in question are at SOP standards, with little or no issue of problems with in the flocks, as such, they are perfect to SOP standards, wether they are a heritage breed , or a new modern breed.

Hence I own flocks of exhibition quality Black Javas...................OLD and critically endangered breed of founding fowl for quite a few breeds.
These birds are not questionable, but are pure genetically & SOP standard perfect.
So my Javas are both heritage AND Exhibition Quality.

The same with my Buckeyes.

Hope this helps, any still confused, let me know !
