If you ever get one, you will not be disappointed. Himself got one last year, and we can do chickens, ducks and even HUGE turkeys in no time at all. We have a friend come over and bring his birds; they do the work and I provide lunch!

We do ours with what we have:
A turkey fryer pot attached to propane tank (filled with water to 160 degrees........and DH built a plucker, and the stainless steel sink with cutting board..............3 rubber maide tubs of water, first to clean guts out...second to rinse, third to chill down & bag them in 1 gal freezer bags before they go rigor.

Wanna see the plucker he built ?????????? It is WAAAAAAAAAAY cool !!
So..............when you have 25 or more birds to do, we hook up 3-4 cones & it goes fast with the 2 of us !

I showed my husband and he says I can get one once we move. He wants us to raise ALL our own chicken.... and well for a family of 5 thats a lot. He is thinking about 150 - 200 per year. He is also gone a lot so it would make it much easier on me if I needed to butcher when he was gone. They are expensive but I figure after a few years it will pay for itself with the time I save.

ooo I need a sink like that.... Very nice. I would love to see the plucker... It took me about 20 mins to do one bird....( I think it was my fault tho I didnt get the water hot enough.

You need a poop tray about 8-10" UNDER the roost with an edge on it about 2" then screw the ladder to the poop tray.
Birds roosteing poop all night, and it adds up in the poop tray instead of all over on the floor.
Sand added to the poop tray makes for easy cleaning with a bucket & cat litter spoon.

Lovely Poopy pictures, eh ?
Seriously, having a poop tray makes clean up a breeze !
Every other day I simply get my bucket & go sifting sand.
Hardly any poop ever on the floor.

P.S. Most breeds can fly up to the poop tray edge, then hop onto the roost, and no ladder needed.

I so need to do this in my coop. I dont have poop tray at all. What kind of sand do you use? Like kitty litter?
