Nope thinking winch or truck and a block in line. That way the truck only has to pull 1/2 the load.

I don't have a winch and a block never entered my mind. It's all moot now with the rot we found. (my #1 son and I) So it's back to the original plan of building a brand new structure. I'll have to rethink my floor plan for the girls and hopefully I will begin to lay it out tomorrow or Tues at the latest. I only have the 8 RIR and don't plan any more for right now, but I know how that goes just from being on this forum. So I want a little room for expansion.

Also since yer gonna build a coop and you only have 8 birds. Build the coop/run for a few more. Like say oooooooh maybe 32. It's chicken math!

Well, I was not happy with the incubator from the co-op for the classroom setting - it would have been too easy for the kids to disturb things and not be able to see as well.
So I jumped on the chance to get Hallerlakes incubator; and came home with it and seven eggs

It's warmed up and the seven eggs went in this evening!

So; for the test hatch we have (correct me if I'm wrong please - I should have taken notes!)

4 brabanters
1 brabanter/ black copper maran cross
1 brabanter/spitz cross
1 brabanter/EE cross

I'll post pictures later :) Please wish me luck with my first incubator hatch!

I sent lesson plans over to the teacher and I think she's ordering the "ovascope" as it will plug into her webcam and she candle in front of the class! How cool would that be!

I think it will be 8 x 12 or 6 x 12 (the coop) and I plan on a good size run. I would like to give them access to the back yard but I have get my Jake acclimated to the chickens. I've already started that process and he's very calm when out by the brooder in the garage. He has not yet seen them in person, just sniffed, etc. He's a small dachound and not aggressive at all. I have my fingers crossed. If he will accept the chickens then I can let them roam the back yard and he will keep the cats at bay.
Any way, the run will be about 12 x 25 at minimum, more if I can afford it.

Hi JB

You can borrow my shaver for Jet - it works well! We shave Shasta every 6 weeks in the spring and summer, but she has not been shaved since October (other than her legs which I shave frequently as they act like velcro when she is near blackberry vines and they tangle badly in her coat). Her hair grows incredibly fast, she looked just like Jet!

I really appreciate the offer. We own a shaver, because of Puppy. We also use the shaver on the Yorkies. Anytime the mats start to get to bad, we shave them down. We have never had to shave our dogs as often as you do. So I am grateful for small favors.

This may have been answered before. But it sounds like you are cutting into the crop. First thing is to remove the feed of the birds that are going to be processed at least 24 hours before you do them in. That way there isn't anything in their crop. From there it is a case of being very careful with following the membranes around the variety of organs. DH and I have offered to let anyone that wants to come and watch us butcher. We haven't even started any meat birds this year. It is going to have to wait a bit longer this year.
