I am getting very bored here locked in the wee cabin & all this steady rain for the last 36 hours straight !!!!!

And to think it is going to be like this for the next 5 days ??????????????????????

Glad I got a boat !

It is coming down non-stop! Flooding tomorrow, I'm sure of it.

So why did you get a ticket ?

Neighbor who used to be best friend, turned crabby on me and called about having chickens.
Ordinance officer did not see any chickens but wrote a ticket anyway.

So now I get to see if all the smoke (which I know was bad to breath killed all my eggs in the incubator) Only time will tell. Im so mad! Oh and did I say I was up all night with the flu!!"

I am pretty sure I know which one it is. All of these are mature birds. She is a 2 or 3 year old BR. I am assuming she has layed before. Right now none of my layers are laying. I even built them a nice set of nesting boxes (all made from local scraps).

I am sorry about your eggs. and incubator. I hope the eggs fair okay.

1,000$ for them to repair the wounds (that Rikke already did what she could on)

they did xrays, and Marty's hip is broken on the left side .. 2,000$ to operate and fix it.

They are cleaning and re-dressing her open wounds now, and will send Rikke home with some meds.

Here's it to hope that the chicken will be able to heal the hip fracture on it's own .. we cannot afford that.

OMG!!! I'm sorry those are EXTREMELY over inflated prices!!! IT DOES NOT cost that much to operate on a chicken!! Sorry, and 1000 for the wounds??? Come on!!!! I can't even afford that for my self!! I used to be a Vet Tech!!! That's outrageous!! The fact that you cared enough to take her in is commendable,!

Okay, gotta share:
These are seramas that hatched under my cochin bantam. 1 more egg is pipping. The nesting box was gross...she pooped in it. Her mother never did that. Anyway. I pulled out the box, set the eggs and chicks in a nice nest of new clean soft hay. took a quick photo first. they are so tiny. More photos shoots in a few days...I won't bother them any more.

Working my way through the posts, server down all day. Responding to this post.

It's been a while, but I finally remembered what I was thinking when this was happening to one of my hens and that was vitamin D deficiency. It would make sense that one hen might be filling up too much on scratch (in my book love=food, therefore more love=more food, so I finally stopped giving them scratch or treats on a regular basisas I always gave them too much.) I never had a problem with this at midsummer. Calcium, oyster shells, egg shells mean naught if they don't have vit D to process it, and it can be difficult for them to get enough of it naturally this time of year.

So, even though I only had one hen doing this, I stopped giving the scratch and the problem disappeared. Can't say for sure this was truly the reason, but nevertheless it worked. We use the pellets.

I've heard castor oil drops can help. ?????

Not sure about castor oil ?
But I have heard that cod liver Oil helps.it has Vit D, pretty sure.
That is for soft shelled eggs or thin eggs though.
Fart eggs are just pullets starting out at lay & lay the weirdest tiny or completely round little marbles.
Someone else told me chickens do not absorb Vit D from sunshine.their skin is all covered.
Even in full summer a chicken is covered with feathers & their skin protected from all sunshine.
They must therefore get all they need from their food.
And I also heard something about phosporous being very important to egg production...guess I will go see which book I read that in.

So I have a question for everyone,
Ive been contacted to breed some of my goats and than sell them to someone overseas, they will give me at least 300 per goat and they will go to a dairy than Im sure in time will be eaten.

I know in my heart it would kill me but what would you all do? If I did it the one's sold would pay all of my goat costs and maybe more. The person who's been doing it for the past few years in one of my good friends and she said get over it and just do it.
It kind of goes hand in hand with me wanting to have meat chickens and not being able to do the dirty deed. I know if I did it, it sure would have with the money for next year but than again food costs too.
Tell me what you think.

Thats a hard one. I had meat chickens for the first time this year, I thought it would be hard to do the deed but in the end I knew it needed to be done. I am not religious by any means but I said a quick prayer and was thankful for their life. It didnt make it easier but I was able to get thru it knowing they had a good life, fresh air and didnt have to live in a 2x2 cage with 3 other birds and could stretch their legs and their wing. You have to fallow your heart if you cant bare the thought of them being eatten then I wouldnt do it. You need to be at peace with your choice and be able to sleep soundly at night. What do you do with your goats once they get old? Have you ever thought of just breeding around here and selling your babies at home? I have been looking for pygmies myself but I have noticed there are A LOT of people looking for quality goats. And you can never have to many babies
