Oh girlfriend, I got there last summer. My neighbor across the street grandson was here and I had the baby goat outside with one of our dogs ( his mama he thought) well the little boy asked if he could pet the goat sure I said come on in and play with it for a little bit. ( I was out side no big deal) Well the next week he came back and I was really really sick he took it as ok to come over and play with the goat. Mean while all of my other dogs in the house are barking and barking I told him to please go home I was sick. Well this went on for days until I yelled at my poor husband and told him to put a lock on the front gate! Did it help NO than the kid just played outside of my fence... Now don't get me wrong I love kids hence I'm a school bus driver but I don't want them here.
I think you can call animal control and tell them the dogs are barking early in the AM but than that will open a whole can of worms I'm sure.

So I wonder will I like my grand kids when I have them...

Take if from me you will love your grandkids and when you find all the neat ways of wreaking sweet, sweet revenge upon your kids you will enjoy them even more. Nothing like babysitting the grandkids and 30 minute b4 mom and dad show up you give the little darlings some oh so good chocolate. Then you can smile and wave good by to the little darlings as mom and dad head off for home with the little ball of energy that is just starting to energize.
hehe. yeah I'm evil, but it is so good. alas, my grand kids have gotten too big now (the ones that are close by) and the ones in Indiana are just too far away.

I always wondered how it happened and now I know. I have finally become the cranky old woman in the neighborhood.

All I want is peace and solitude in my own backyard, but I have had to resort to taking my dogs out in the backyard to do their business on a leash. They no longer have free access since the neighbors behind us NEVER bring their dogs in the house or do anything to control them when they charge our wire fence and snap and growl and bark at my dogs. The only supervision they have is the 5 year old girl who is out there constantly asking me question after question after question after - well you get the point.

Yes, I understand the neighbors have every right to own dogs. But as if the untrained lab puppy and "rescued" pit bull/dalmation weren't enough - (I'm not impressed by your boastful "rescuing" of the dog, BTW. I'd be much more impressed if you actually ever spent TIME with it), now they have another new room mate and surprise! The room mate has a Doberman. So my irresponsible neighbors officially have a pack of unsupervised dogs that come running to charge our fence every time DH or I take the dogs out to go potty or even if we want to toss the ball for our Golden Retriever. And now to make it even more awesome, the dogs are digging all along the fence line on their side of our fence. Even cuter, the little girl is helping them. I just chewed her out. And I also told her to keep her hands off of the fence because I'm tired of seeing her grab onto it and rock it back and forth all the time to weaken it. I've asked her nicely several times.

The doberman starts barking about 6 AM. No one in the house ever shushes it, or even brings it in the house. It has it's own lawn chair in the back yard.

And I'm sorry you guys - I like kids - I even had one I was particularly fond of, but this poor bored little girl is out there asking endless questions every time I'm working in the coop, feeding, watering, no matter what. "What are you holding in your hand? What do chickens eat? Can I pet your chickens? Where are their eggs? Can you make a sound like a chicken?- *I* can. Can I feed your chickens some carrots? How do you know our dogs names? They don't know yours. Why can't your chickens come out? What is that stuff your giving your chickens? Do your chickens have names?" All very normal, natural questions and believe me, every one gets answered, but - Sometimes I just want to be left alone...

A buddy of ours is going to come help us extend the fence so it's a couple of feet taller, help secure the bottom, whatever else we can do but we're limited. It follows a very uneven line of trees and there's no way anything more substantial could be built without a great deal of $$ and without losing a couple of important feet of what is already a shallow yard. DH isn't budging on that issue. I asked about the possibility of electrifying the fence and he looked at me shocked - "you can't do that! What about that little girl!" My girlfriend responded, "well, she'd only touch it once".

So yes, it's official. Now I'm the scary, cranky old lady in the neighborhood. Pretty soon the kids will come up with a name, like "Old Lady Galagan" or "The West End Witch" and start throwing rocks at my window. And this is how it happens...
Sorry you guys. I'm just venting. I'd really love to have my peaceful retreat of a backyard back.

Well then WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!!!! LOL!!! I can SO relate to everything you just said!! Now, you live in the city, I'm sure there are dog barking laws right?? Here if we do, no one would enforce it! So, that's why I just yell at the DA's my self!! I, like you want to be left in peace. When I had a dog, she learned when to bark and when not too, when I had a dog that I tried everything with and found she was neurotic I found a great home for her! There is no reason other people can't be respectful of others peace and quiet and teach their dogs how to listen and mind! What about calling the humane society and telling them of the unsupervised dogs and the disturbance?? They would probably come out before Child protective services would to see whats up with the 5 yr old!!

oops! did I just say that!! LOL!
I like all your kid questions!! Cause it's true!! And yes guaranteed she would only touch that fence once!! Sorry, I know I'm being a brat!!!

Mine seem to be doing fine also. I put the smaller 2 out with them. They go under the lights when they want to and run around playing. I have to remind myself that this is what the hen raised chicks did when I had a broody hen hatch some eggs. I do keep them apart from the big chickens for a while-they all get a good look at eachother and then I gradually start letting them integrate. Usually my youngsters don't venture outside until they are about 3 months old.

I put my 8 little ones out in the garage-coop a few days ago. They were just getting too big to be in the brooder that I had in the living room. I'm sure that 7 are pullets and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte I'm 99% sure is a roo. Now that they are all out with the mature hens and the 3 mallards, the roo is starting to learn some manners.

I know that I have violated the normal protocols of introducing new chicks to an established flock. On the other hand, I've been checking on them closely and I've found no sign of stress or chill.

Today, 5 of the 8 chicks came out in the run to join the big girls. Even the mallard ducklings were out to enjoy the evening sun. Ducklings and chicks are from a Feb. 27th hatch. So about 5 weeks old now and doing well on their own. I do still have a red heat lamp and a white 75w bulb in the coop in case they want to get warm.

I savor my privacy and this would drive me crazy. I fled my condo in the city after living next to the drunk guy with the loud stereo at 2AM on the weekends.

A five year old is very capable of understanding that she shouldn't touch the hot wire fence. This 5 year old sounds like she would make a good chicken sitter in a couple of years. Might be worth nurturing this one along (LOL). I took on the 16 year old daughter of the drunk out of work neighbor and turned her into the best baby sitter we ever had. Not saying you have to. Just a thought.

Don't keep it to yourself about how much the dogs are bugging you. The same drunk out of work neighbor rehomed her sheppard mix after she kept barking at my horse and attacked another neighbors dog.

Good luck and I hope you find some peace!

Hi guys! I have been trying to catch up. Got back from Cabo last Saturday night and have been working and doing laundry all week. Trying to spend time with my chickies too! Had a great vacation, but I did miss my kids and my girls. But definitely not the cold and rain!

Spring is in the air with all of the hatching going on! Cute pics CL!

CR I hope you are doing well, thinking of the good memories even when your heart might be sad.

I hope everyone is having a good Friday!

I am going to go back out and check on my Lucy. She is feeling under the weather. I think she isn't long for this world.
Her abdomen(not her crop) is distended, she is walking funny because of it and now she is breathing funny. I gave her shot of Tylan and I am hoping it works.
fl.gif
She has had reproductive problems off and on for ages but she has always been fine in a day or two. But this time seems different and I am not sure the Tylan is going to help. But she is in a crate with heat, food and water. So we will see.

Wow - that sounds a lot like my house - minus the kid. We have two terrible dogs behind us that are left out unsupervised in the back yard while they are out until 2 or 3 a.m.

They also dig at our fence. We found hard plastic "garden edges" that we pound in from our side going about 4 inches into the ground so even if the dogs manage to dig under they hit plastic underneath the wood fence.

Wouldn't it be nice to live in the middle of many acres?

welcome back

sorry to hear Lucy is not feeling well. I hope the special treatment makes her feel better!

Its out. I went to check after a quick dinner and right before I had to leave for choir practice and noticed that it had zipped all the way. So I picked up my daughter and just as we looked into the bator, pop, out comes the chick. She was so excited. Of course I was too.

That is so awesome that you and your daughter were able to watch the chick hatch! What a great experience to share.
