What is the Henhouse Coaching Network? The mission of Henhouse Coaching Network is to establish local grassroots movements of networks that are committed to developing, producing, and maintaining authentic, historic, standard bred poultry as described by the American Poultry Association (APA) Standard of Perfection. Birds will be produced for breeding, and growing to provide meat & eggs for the dining tables of American families. Our goal is to establish local coalitions that work together for the cause of sustainable poultry farming. Hi, fellow Washingtonians. Hope this is the right place to say hello, as it's my first time signing up and posting here.

I live in Yakima, and just got my little flock. They're still in the brooder but the oldest 5 are two months old now, and are starting to get their head feathers so it shouldn't be long until I get them out into the coop. I have a few younger birds too (not by choice, I had to wait to get my Welsummers and Delawares, so they're about a month younger). I started out with a single giant cardboard box, but have since upgraded them to a double box, bolted together and duct-taped at the bottom against moisture, with two lamps hung at two heights so they have two zones, and a couple bamboo sticks for roosting perches when they decide they want to use them. One of them is a light-bodied breed and she can already flap up to the edge of the box (even though I raised the flaps straight up to stop her from doing that). I definitely think she's ready for the coop. She's been good about not jumping down since her one incident when I found her cold, huddled on the floor of the garage (it's secure and safe from drafts, luckily, but she didn't like it much).

My mother raised chickens when I was a kid, so I have some exposure to it, but this is my first time raising them myself, so been learning a lot: Googling, reading books, reading all the forums... very enlightening.

My current project is a secure run attached to their coop so I don't have to be up at the butt-crack of dawn, but I need to make sure it's secure at night. I have a fenced yard (6 foot wooden on 3 sides, 4 foot chain-link on the fourth) but I still want their run to be skirted with welded wire, just in case something gets in there. We don't have racoons that I've ever seen, but I did see one skunk once, and there's neighborhood dogs and feral cats about.

I am trying I promise. R u going to be in Monroe any time soon? this weekend? Are you going to Stevenson? I am not? This weekend I actually have stuff going on...was kind of hoping to bring husband with me too to help me drive and know where it is I am going. Monroe I can do by myself and I have a place to stay. I am so sorry. I know this is a terrible inconvience for you and I want my turkeys.

Yeah, I'm the dumb head that forgot to say anything earlier. I'm leaving at 9 AM tomorrow morning so I can get to Pullman by 2:30 to pick Lily up from work at the dining hall. Any birds going with me would need to come to my house or darn close to here by then. I'm a prisoner in my home today until DH's medication is delivered. He has medication delivered here once a month that has to be signed for. Now he's telling me I need to get the oil changed in the Prius before I go - this is the car that HE drives every day - now I want to use it, but I have to have it serviced. AND on top of that - our gas furnace won't shut off but it isn't giving off any heat. So, I'll have to get someone here today to look at that!!!
I hate when everything is dumped in my lap at the last minute.
However, my offer of bird transport still stands - if they get here by 9 AM tomorrow morning, I'll drive them over Snoqualmie pass!

I have finally made connections with a boy to clean my coops for me. I hope this works out. I could also hire him to pet sit when we go away.
