Hi fellow Washingtonians! I just found this area of Backyard Chickens, nice!

I am a stay at home mom of 3 kids, ages 2, 3, and 5. We have one indoor/outdoor kitty named Ike and 15 new chicks! I live in Covington where the limit is ***3*** (stupid!!) but we live on a half acre with secluded backyard and aren't too worried about being turned in. I have:
4 Buff Orpington (17 days old)
4 Rhode Island Red (17 days old)
3 Black Australorp (10 days old)
2 Ameraucauna (17 days old)
2 Welsummer (17 days old)

We are still brooding them all in the same 2x4' plywood box in the corner of the kitchen but the dust is already getting problematic (for me, allergies UGH!) so instead of making the coop (5x7' shed) level on a concrete foundation for now we're just going to find a level spot in the backyard, drop it off, and hook up the electricity to it (maybe Sunday?!) to get the girls out of the house. I can brood them easily enough in the coop and most likely it'll be right outside my bedroom door for easy access! I hope to meet some of you here or IRL!

CL - I would hope that you would let someone know if you conked yourself on the head! You of course, know the dangers of internal brain hemorrhaging. And if you were to act a little goofy after conking your head, (should someone be able to tell the difference

) would need to get to the hospital immediately. Head injuries scare me. A very good friend of my parents - who was a brilliant architect, had a very large firm here in town and a wonderful and sweet man - fell on the ice the year before last and hit his head. His wife was out of town at the time. He had a headache for a few days, but by the time he decided to have someone take him to the hospital it was too late and he passed away hours after being admitted because of the bleeding going on in his head for those couple of days. Someone can be walking around, acting perfectly normal and then die. The actress Natasha Richardson died after hitting her head while skiing - thought she was fine but was gone within 24 hours.

I would urge anyone I care about to never ignore any head injuries no matter how inconsequential they may seem. I would rather be accused of over reactingor making a big deal out of nothing, and feeling foolish than have it be a fatal error.

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone! I was asked by someone if I typed fast - funny story: A friend and I were having a friendly verbal battle two weeks ago over who could type faster so we did one of those online typing tests. Then she demanded we find another one. Then another. Then another. After 4 typing tests, I had her beat flat out with my average of 90 words per minute and her average of 75 (we rounded). Not that 75 is anything to sneeze at but when I say "I type fast" I ain't kidding!

Imp - In all the time I've lived in Brinnon (since November, 2011 so not a lot of time) I've not one time seen a cop in town. We live about ten miles south of Brinnon, technically, but I drive through there on my way to Home Depot in Sequim. Something I seem to do at least twice a week since we bought the place. I had never in my life heard of Brinnon until we found the house here. I thought it was because I didn't grow up in Washington but I've talked to friends who have lived here their whole lives and have never heard of the place. I can't say I'm 100% thrilled to be here since I'm a city girl through-and-through but it makes my husband happy so there you have it.

I do have a question of anyone who has ducks. My little ducky does this odd not-quite-wheezing thing when she's excited about her food. That would be every time I feed her something other than the chick food that's always available and that would be typically twice a day. It's not really wheezing but more like she has a snotty nose or something like that. I can't really describe it. I can definitely hear her breathing, though, and I'm almost positive that the sound is coming from her little noseletts. I examined her in a very odd way but the best way I could with the tools I have on hand - I looked at it through one of my camera's (I have about 70 cameras - that's a whole other discussion for a totally different board) with a macro lens to magnify it and see if I could see some kind of obstruction or ??? I don't know what I was looking for beyond something obvious. Any ideas?

Other than one of my chickens, Millie, attempting to murder another chicken, Sasparilly, last night, all is well.

Two am setting here waiting for the next round of pain meds to kick in. I am not one to normally take the pain meds but I am so thankful the doc sent me home with 4.

I am well aware that some may take issue with the things that I post or how I come across. I am ok with that. I know that we not all see things the same. Yes I will admit that there are or have been others on here that have irritated me too. However I have been working on being a little more understanding of others. See I have actually ask some third parties for information that may help me to understand. Sometimes people are trying to deal with issues that are unknown to most and if we simply take/ make the time to learn about them perhaps we can also be helpful rather than make the final comment that may push them over the edge.
I DO NOT intentionally come here to stir up trouble or be hurtful to others. My life is about trying to help others however I can.
If I do irritate some people I am sorry that you feel that way but this is just me the same as I have been since I joined BYC long before many now on here.
So if I do bother you please feel free to just ignore my posts or even try out the "block member" button. You really are not going to hurt my feelings by doing that since I will never know. And hey worst case IF the mods feel that I am just too much of a problem child then they can deal with me as they may. I hope that never comes to be but I am aware that it is always a possibility.

And in the mean time bless you all. I am so thankful for my family here on BYC and the special ones who I know I can turn to when I need someone.

And on a little lighter side. Michelle would not allow me to drive myself she said I could ride with her or she would call the bus (the one with all the pretty lights).. I am not much on mass transit so opted to have Michelle take me.
So we get to the ER, I have the red juice running out of my head, down my face and all over my hand that is holding the dressing on. They ask me "what happened".Well anyone who knows CR knows this is gonna get twisted. And my reply was simple. Well see my girlfriend here (pointing at Michelle) caught me with my wife, got pi**ed off and took a fence post pounder to my head. Poor Michelle thought she knew me NOT well enough! Michelle said from now on she will just let me lay there and bleed. Of course I did finally tell them all the right story but that just wasn't as fun.

Well I am caught up almost completely with planting......only have squash to do now...it can waite a few days.
Did all the melons yesterday............planted all but 4 tomatoes into the green house yesterday & row covered at night it was so cool.........

So today I can finally get my house elevation drawings done........hopefully.........gotta get it done or we cannot order lumber !

Maybe pop in later, and post pics of the chicken tractor~~~~~~~~~~DH has it covered by tarp as he painted it yesterday....

Later peeps !!!!!!!!

I was thinking of her last night wihile I was in the ER with my son, he feel and hit his head about his eye and on his cheek. This guy just doesnt seem to get a break.

Oh, an update on the Schnauzers that our neighbor found running down the street and decided to bring home to make a total of 5 dogs in their yard? DH had mentioned to her that someone was going to be looking for those dogs and she pretty much ignored him. So, the following morning my talkative little 5 year old friend was playing next to my fence and volunteered the following - "We don't have those gray dogs anymore. They didn't belong to us so we couldn't keep them, so we opened up the gate and let them out". Nice. Instead of actively looking for the owners they just let them out into the street again.
Later that day as I was leaving our development I saw a big "LOST" notice stuck on the pole but someone was right behind me so I couldn't get the number. Just as I was about to turn around, I saw a guy with both dogs on a leash, so figured the owner had found his dogs after all.

Oh my gosh, nice people dont ya just want them to take care of my 6 dogs now

Its too bad you couldnt have taked to the people and found out more info. Like did they run away or were they taken.

sent me a text that he dropped a post pounder on his head. Hope he is alright. Said he needed stitches.

LMBO!!! Sorry not trying to be rude or mean! As I know FULL well how much this hurts! Remember 2 years ago I did the SAME thing! Knocked myself out, and off to the ER I went with a nasty cuncussion.

Sorry CR! Those darned things pack a wallop! It took 4 months before the bump went away!
