So, am I to understand that everybody in Washington who is serious about poultry head to Stevenson, WA, on I-84? Is it once a month? And what about the poultry auction in Chehalis, is that worth anything?

I'm not serious about poultry, in that I'm not a breeder and I don't show poultry. But I'm seriously addicted to keeping chickens and looking at them though, so that's why I'm attending the show in Stevenson! This particular show doesn't run every month, no. It may be twice a year? Or only once, I can't recall. I've only attended in the spring. I don't know about the auction in Chehalis, I'm sure someone else will fill you in.

So speaking of Stevenson - I want to let everyone know if you're planning on being in Stevenson that on Friday evening you're invited to my suite for wine and snacks. I've got a few different types of wine, crackers, cheese, salami and some sweets. It's SUPER casual, so please don't worry about cleaning up after you work in the barns or coop in during the day. I just want you to be able to come by and relax and enjoy yourselves! I have no idea what my room number will be yet, but please feel free to call me so I can let you know where I am! (253) 973-6953 I'm figuring we'll have snacks out and wine opened by 5-6 PM? Come on by anytime after that! Looking forward to seeing anyone and everyone - please feel free to invite others - I know there will be other Washington folks that have posted here I haven't met yet.

Got home a little while ago after taking my little "foster" chicks to their new home. My friend who will be raising them is a professional photographer, (actually does weddings, families, babies, glamour, boudoir) so she just took a couple of little snapshots of the babies that I thought I'd share. She'll also be coming with me to Stevenson so if you come to our "open house" tomorrow you'll meet her! (She and I have been BFF's since high school which is... well, more than a few years ago).

Well, no, because I live up on Whidbey Island so we're closer to the Canadian border than we are to Stevenson! :D

Can't speak for Chehalis, but the Everson Livestock Auction on Mondays is actually pretty good. Go early (starts at 12:30) and get a good seat. You'll want to check out the poultry beforehand and make sure you bring your own carriers, some of the things folks bring birds in aren't appropriate for the ride home. We go at least once a month, sometimes twice.

Sadie Sue,

Thanks for the info on Stevenson. I'll have to check it out next time it comes around.

TrystInn,

Wow, Everson. That is WAY up there! I might as well plan a trip to Vancouver while I'm at it! I'll need to get passports for the kids, though...hmmmm....Thanks for the info!

Gastro doc update appt today & he is very interested in my thyroid , and the amount of meds I am on...........maybe effecting my "system"
So had to do the blood draw again.
Other than that, Einstein has a periodontal pocket exposing dentin & hurtzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and so they have an APPT to do curatage & want to bone graft which I know will be useless in anyone over 30 years of age.
Tomorrow is Squash planting day.....already started all 6 mealon types 1 week ago & all are up & running...........ALL tomatoes are at least 16" tall & transferred to the green house for 2 weeks now & doing great !!!
Peas are climbing !
Skovies is on slug patrol all day and I must say they are darn good at it !
Both girls came back up to the tub by the porch yesterday afternoon with giant strings of snotty slug goo hanging off bills like chop slime...................LOL they are keepers !

I love 2 buck chuck! In the summertime I go to Rattlesnake Lake in the evenings with my friends. The hubbies work the BBQ, the kids swim in the shallows or play in the canoes, and the mommies swim to the edge of the area where the kids can go and we find submerged stumps to sit on, just below the water surface and we share a bottle of 2 buck chuck.

Do the Scovies eat the plants as well? I am fearing no garden this year

Uh oh, fuzzy cuteness overload!

WOW, amazing how fast these chicks grow. The brooder we made two weeks ago needs to be replaced with a bigger one. Well, now I know for next time. LOL

Was out gazing at my chicks and snapped a few pictures of a couple.

Here is Amy, my Salmon Faverolle (I think that is what she is! ) The little gal is Biby, the White Cochin Bantam. Love the size diffrence.

Amy, again....not wanting her picture taken.

Then there is Silver. (Silver Laced Wyandotte). She is the most curious and will crowd the others out when I take her picture!!! Oh look...there is Biby again.

We let our nephew pick out the names. It was amazing how he walked up, pointed to each one and rattled off a name! And the names fit. Who would have thought he would see a little fluffy black chick and name it Silver...not knowing that it was a SL Wyandotte! And he picked out the name Biby (like Baby with an "i" before he even picked out the chick!)
The rest are
Buff Chantecler: Blaze
Russion Orloff: Shadow
EE: Crystal

Hope all traveling to Stevenson have a great time. We are going out of town for weekend. I've left instructions with my sister in law on how to care for chicks. I feel like I am leaving my newborn for the first time!

Good night
Christina

I went to the coal creek auction in chehalis. It was worth it to me. I wound up going home with barred rocks, speckled sussex and my friend got 15 rabbits. The back of the pickup was definately a poultry barn. One of the hens even laid an egg on the trip home. Out of the girls I got there, I have been getting 3-4 eggs a day which is what I wanted. Its almost more eggs than we need so we are constantly giving them away to hubby's kids. Honestly, the coal creek auction was friendly and fun. I know there is another auction in chehalis but i haven't been to it yet. There is also an auction in enumclaw, wa.

Hey guys I have a quick Question. Has anyone raised Red or Black Broilers? How do they compare to the Cornish Crosses?

We have raised the red broilers with our neighbors. We both have slightly different methods of brooding and feeding and we had fairly similar results. It took at least twice as long to grow them out as the Cornish Cross. We harvest the CC at 6- 12 weeks (we do in a handful each week as they are ready) and the Reds were 14 to 20 weeks. They eat more because they are around longer, somewhat less muscled, but much more active and healthier overall. Flavor is a little bit stronger and the meat is a little less mushy, like eating a cull cockrel.

Okay it's me just saying Hi to everyone. Very cute chicken pictures, and very nice brooder building.
