we had ours in the Jumbo 40 Gallon storage containers that they kind of "outgrew" - Babies on the other side of the block was not what we wanted.. so luckly we have a small shed behind the house that came with the property. They have loads of space to run & fly with no worries

I still had to make them a little "carboard house" to run into, but least we dont have to worry about waking up with them running around the Office room or somewhere in the house...lmao...

Yeah, ours are in the garage, a problem in and of itself on cloudy/sunny days when we leave. It seems if I raise the lights or turn one off then it will surely be cloudy and the chicks huddled and puffed up when I get back, or blazingly sunny if I leave the lights low. That's only really a problem for our lonely sultan who gets picked on and is in a small corner and can't retreat from the heat. Those last few sunny days we put them outside in the hutch. Our little quail antwerps like to fly out of the brooder, so I try to keep it covered. Another problem with cardboard! Hoping in the new coops on our property I can have a separate coop to put chicks this age, with a brooder box they can run into and out of.

How does the Sultan do with this weather? -- I read they dont do well with Cold Climate, mainly warm weathered. We sadly have a HUGE chicken coop that was build here, but a certain "male" doesnt want it used as such instead a "Tool Shed".. So we're going to buy one of those Moveable Chicken Coops for now- until our Mansion Mini version of our house gets built... then the coop we bought, I brought up a great idea to use it for any chicks we get later... they'll be able to have their own safe coop, with their own run for older & we'd be able to put it by the main coop so they can see & get used to the other chickens without issue =)

How much shade can a Lyda rose take?
What size should I expect in 5 years?
Many thorns? Any fragrance?
I've been thinking of adding one ever since way back when the two of you were writing about them.

I have my Lyda in a large pot, in full sun.
I pruned her way back last fall as SF recommended, and as far as the fragrance, it is out of this world !!!!!!!
This beauty has blooms that look alot like a dogwood, as far as the rest (shade, etc) I will let the expert (SF) tell you all that, as I have had my Lyda just 1 year now.

Yeah I just dont know its the same size as the others and has the same feather pattern but isnt red red and has no waddles. Even the less developed males have some waddle.... It's larger then my BO and my RIR hen... So I dunno. UGH i dont wanna put her in the stock pot if I dont have to...

At this age it is easy to sex them, pick up the bird in question & dig around on the saddle area for hackle, there should be pointed shiny hackle emerging on saddle & neck.
If it is a cockerel, that is.
If the bird just has rounded feathers there, rounded like your fingers, it is a pullet.
The hens should also be a bit darker than the cockerels as well.

So I just got back from putting my favorite hen down. My Golden Sexlink "Lucy" was always my little buddy. She had massive tumors in her abdomen and there was nothing we could do for her. She was suffering so I took her to Dr. Bruce and had them put her to sleep. I just couldn't do it myself. So that's the last of my original three. I am going to bury her next to my BR, her "sister".

Congrsts on the hatch Z! Sound like you will be over run!

Today's baby girl, out of a blue roan Shorthorn/Angus f1 cow and the little roan Shorthorn bull I bought last spring:
In other news, we drenched the sheep with the same Valbizen the cattle got on Saturday, and I got three Hamburg, three EE and three Wyandotte eggs. The only nonparticipant was the broody Australorp.
Speaking of whom: do all broodies poo in their feed dishes, or is that her specialty?

Well, it has been yet another sleepless night, thanks to Einstein's infernal snoring !
I am exhausted and have work to do but zero energy.
I have 2 paintings to do & so exhausted I cannot even think about it.
It will have to all waite til tomorrow, providing I get sleep tonight.
