Oh thank you! I'd be thrilled with second choice! I kind of just wanted one white pullet to add to the couple I'm going to keep, provided I don't end up with all boys. Let's see how it goes for both our hatches - thanks kmh!

today is a sad day. Hubby's bird dog managed to kill a few of my chickens and one of my brand new runner ducklings. I am still counting who I have left. I caught the bird dog after he pulled one of my young speckled sussex hens through the wire fencing and was in process of getting his fill. shooed dog away and checked out my baby... one leg was tore off and a wing. poor thing was still breathing so I had to put her out of her misery. Would not have been right to make her suffer like that. Dog got chained up and talked to hubby at work. He says dog is going. Sad but necessary. And since my friend's flock of birds is in with mine it makes it hard to see who all is there of mine. I am taking a break before going back out and seperating the 2 flocks so I can get an accurate head count. ugh!!!!!!!!

Ugh! That must feel like a disaster. You could try lining the base with a finer mesh wire, like hardware cloth that the dog couldn't get it's nose through. That is if you are willing to try one more time for hubby's dog. We have a Springer Spaniel and have been very lucky that his interest in chickens has been very mild.

Quite a difference from birth to full grown! Love the colorful head on Mr. Peepers.

If Mr Peers is mad, or stressed out, his whole head gets red (fast ! Like a squid !)
If he is content, he gets turquiose & deep blues on his head & red caruncles.
He is in effect, a mood turkey.
You can tell exactly what his mood is !

My eggs are in lockdown-it's day 20. Trying not to bite my nails. I have 13 Breda Fowl and 1 Blue Copper Marans egg (from my own hen) that I put in with the Bredas. I haven't used an incubator before, just a broody hen. And I somehow don't have any faith that this styrofoam box could really work. And if they do hatch, I get to scramble for a place to put them in a couple months!
