Have a good day Russ!

I'm so happy, ^^he just helped me figure out what my ordinances are for chickens and basically...anything goes! I thought I had *some* restrictions but apparently it's much more lax than I though, woohoo!

Now I probably don't have to get rid of our possible roo unless he's simply annoying to ME!

Q. Ok I went out to do the Baby Check thing.... I'm seeing Nubbies coming in on a couple babies.... I know some Hens get spurs too.. but I'm curious on if we have the ones that do...

So far I saw nubbies on our Orpington, Russian Orloff, RIR Cockerel - The other RIR doesnt have nubs like the for sure known Cockerel... anyone know if the first 2 breeds I listed if the Hens get spurs as well... & im not just being all paranoid, that we wound up with more Roo's than wanted ....

Maybe there's a site that I can go to see which ones wind up with spurs or something...

We also may have to get rid of my sons Bantam Frizzle

His lil "Diaper Dan" apparently pecked my mom enough that he/she drew blood... We for warned him that if that bird becomes aggressive it's gotta go... of course he didnt take that very well & started coming up with excuses on "why" the bird did it... then the water works began to kick in... Tried explaining to him that doesnt matter who's bird it is... Mine,Moms, one of the others... if its aggressive its gotta go.... course hard to think of a Lil Banty Frizzle being aggressive....but it happens =( --- we're going to give the bird time & see how it goes... if does it again then sadly bye,bye for "Diaper Dan"..... =(

I moved here last February but I was born and raised in Cle Elum, then lived in Olympia for 20 years so I knew what I was getting into. I didn't realize how much easier it is to wash cages and dogs and duck pens when the weather is really warm. Stuff dries off really fast and we didn't have much mud, ever. Now I have to wipe off 12 dog feet when it is muddy outside and the bouncing, barking, crazy herd comes back in. But once on Mother's Day I locked myself in the pheasant pen and almost died of heat prostitution. Luckily, there was a kiva ladder to rest my butt on til someone FINALLY bothered to come and let me out. Learned a lesson.

Ok I give up! Im 4 days behind on posts, been trying to catch up for the past hour. But Im still 20 pages behind.

Just wanted to let everyone know we are doing just fine. Chloe is still adjusting, Ive got a decent routine down wih baby Emily, still trying to figure out everything else.

I wound up in the ER this past monday. In massive pain, but with all the tests, they were unable to find anything wrong. So I was sent home. I seem to be doing ok now, but am still healing.

My mother felt bad for the chickens while I was in the hospital, and let them out of their run... Now I am missing my BW Ameraucana. No signs that she was picked off here on my property, but I have no idea what happened to her. So now my numbers are down to 6. Poor flock is dwindleing away. I keep toying with the idea of hatching, but I just dont have the time or energy to expend on raising any chicks this year... Oh well.

Hope everyone is doing well! Sorry I havnt been on very much. eventually I will get everything figured out and have time to get on and keep up with everyone.

Until then, I will try to keep you all up to date on how we are doing here on my little farm.

Today marks a the completion of what has proven to be a very tough year for me. See it was one year ago today that after 30++ years I gave up smokeless tobacco. This has not been easy and I am still struggling with it.
I have had some pretty tempting times to go back.
Congratulations CR. Tobacco addiction is one of the most insidious and toughest habit to break. The urge to use will hit you from time to time and for no apparent reason but the duration of the desire will lessen over time. It is tough. I know, I've been there with cigarettes. After 15 years I sometimes still find the scent of a cigarette pleasant but 99% of the time they just stink.
Again, congratulations.

What about pests like rats? I'm worried about them getting through the door opening. I was hoping to leave food out (in the covered part of the run) all the time, but can't do that if there's a chance that rats could get in. I will probably set up the chain link kennel this week just so they can be outside unattended a little bit each day, but before long I'll need to ensure that it's very secure. I'll be putting chicken wire over the top of it and then corrugated roofing over that. Then, hardware cloth around the bottom 2-3'; I was thinking if I secured it to the inside of the run and then pulled it under, to the outside, to lay flat on the ground for another 1'? How does that sound? I could even put large cobbles around that for "decoration" and added security. The only problem is the door. There is a gap between the chain link door and the frame.
We had the same problem with the gap around the chain link door on our big covered pen in AZ. Fixed it by attaching plastic fencing with zip ties so that it extended over the door on all sides. It kept everybody in (even the stray sparrows) We could still open and close easily. Maybe this will help.

Congratulations! Keep it up. It may be hard now, but in the long run, you'll be happy you carried through.
