I was in my 20's and supervisor for the Art Department of a large commercial photo lab in Tacoma - Richcolor Lab. We used to process film and print for professional and amateur photographers all up and down the west coast. My department was all retouching, restoration, mounting, canvas mounting and finishing spray. But in every industry we get jaded. Folks were bringing in fantastic photos of the mountain in various stages leading up to and including the big eruption. I mean this was really impressive stuff! But after weeks of it coming in, and people saying, "I got the most incredible shots of Mt. St. Helens erupting"!, we got to the point where we were thinking, "Oh yeah, you and your brother dude", because it seemed like everyone had pictures of the mountain and we'd seen it all.
Ah youth - sometimes we're just too cool to be impressed.
Looking back on it now, I am still amazed by the event itself and the amazing photos we processed and printed, even including some of Harry Truman, the gentleman who chose not to evacuate despite numerous warnings to get off the mountain. He said he had lived there most of his life and was going to die there. I was fortunate enough to be friendly with our customers who were kind enough to allow me to make a gorgeous 20X24 print of my own using their negative when I found the eruption image I liked best.
The photo is still hanging in my parent's home.
Let's see, I was just over a year old, and we were living in Spokane, my mom says we had just gotten back from a walk to the fabric store as the cloud went over us. Barely made it she said. My dad was working in idaho, he bought a ton of pantyhose, put them over the air filter and changed them several times just to get home to us.. I do not remember obviously any of it, but I do remember watching my Great Grandpa taking the ash and melting it into beads that were beyond amazing and making jewlery with them!Hey CR guess what?? I have another B RIR![]()
Well I just spent three hours on the phone with a very experienced goat person!! Learned tons!! And have more homework to do!! LOL!
I'm tired!!Glad the girls made it safe, which I know they will VF took good care of them! Happy coop building!!![]()
Hopefully I will have kids soon!
OH and ya know what?? NO ONE HAS ASKED.....
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE MOUNTAIN BLEW???
What the heck peeps?? Did you forget what today is?? It's kinda like remembering WW2!!! Ok, just kidding! But, I can't help it, every year when I have to write that date, it just stays with me!!![]()
YAY! That is wonderful!!! LOL dont let no one talk you out of others!Hooray! Just got a call from someone interested in buying a few of my girls. We have too many for the coop and Snow White is a crazy brat and has started pulling feathers out of my sweet Buff Orpingtons. She's gotta go (Delaware), along with one Welsummer, one Black Australorp, and one Buff. I'm going to try to get rid of Cupcake, I don't want her runty butt slowing down my flock's productionHoping to get down to 8-9 girls in the coop, I think they'll be much happier that way. Then we can keep the coop and won't have to try to swap it out for something bigger right now. Easier to work with what we have. So now I have to go outside and separate out the ones for sale from the rest of them so that nobody can convince me of others that they want who weren't for sale...I'm a pushover!![]()

Hmm, would you and FireWife Jess and CFlaming (who needs a run) and I like to all pitch in and have Velvett Fog come out and build us some stuff? I want a little low Silkie tractor/home.Thanks FRF - We're sure enjoying them. Although every day also reminds me just how messy chicks in the house are and what a relief it can be to finally get them outside!!! My biggest challenge in the next week or so will be finding someone to build my coop and run. I'm thinking I may need a grow out coop and then just for leave silkies I'm keeping in it. Unfortunately my actor buddy told me it's a little beyond his skill level. I have the plans for a coop that I think would be perfect for them since it's lower to the ground and has a short ramp. Then the Seramas could summer in it too. I'm envisioning a taller covered run around it. I thought it was pretty cute though!
