Sadly yes it was one of the silkies. the only yellow/white one that hatched from those eggs. But she already died.
Yes, I am pretty sure they are lice. Lice are the longer bodied ones, and mites are the round ones. But she already died. Boo.

This one is under the coop...stays dry.
The ones in-coop do get shavings in them but I screed it out with the cat pan spoon.

Where's a cheap place to get mealworms? The cheapest I can find is 1lb for $16 at Seattle Farm Supply. That's quite a drive for me! Almost an hour away

Personally, I went to the local feedstore, I bought enough to start rainsing on my own. I know have them coming out my ears - litterally. I probably started with 200. It does take a few months to get them to grow into a beetle, wait for them reach breeding maturity, then start to produce. It was worth it to me though. My birds just love them.

It has been a busy week. My Girl Scouts bridged from Daisy's to Brownies, including my daughter.. They were sooo cute, then both my kids had dress rehersal for recitals. My son for ballet and my daughter for ballet and jazz. Tonight are recitals and tomorrow my Girl Scouts are part of the Color Guard for the Parade. And this rain is just insane! It makes me sooo grouchy! I live practically in the desert and I have mushrooms growing in my yard. Ha Ha. my girls keep giving me the stink eye. They are tired of it as well.. Congrats to all with new chicks! Hugs to those who have lost. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!!!

Town is nuts. Every idiot is out on the road. I could not wait to get home. Lots going on in town. My oldest has graduation (yes he made it can you believe it?).

this rain is absolutely nuts. Monsoon in the Okanogan. I hate it.

So .. DW goes to get a pedicure today. When she gets home, she tells me that the folks who run the nail salon are very much interested in buying live duck. They would pay up to $15. I have no experience with ducks. Can someone tell me if that's a price I can make a small profit on? Can you point out a few species that would work? Obviously meat ducks

I'm taking DW out to Red Lobster for her birth-a-versary (which was in May)

let her enjoy her dinner and don't rush her. No "are you ready, are you ready, are you ready".....LOL

Well, I stopped and got Juno two more chicks from the Feed Store.

They're seven day old bantams...the gal working said they don't know the breeds, they come mixed.

So I got a yellow one and a black one

They are just a tad bit smaller than our little chick.

They don't understand Juno yet...I put them in and Juno was telling them to get under her and they just looked at her and started shivering

So I stuffed them under her and don't think they've been back out since.

Everyone seems good now. Hopefully Juno will want to take everyone out tomorrow!

I will also take pictures of the new chicks tomorrow, I just want them to get aquainted w/ mama tonight.

so for your layers...the combo of sunflower kernals, scratch and rolled oats is enough? I have oyster shells separate. Is this their only food? Is it nutritionally balanced? Right now I am buying nutrena layer crumble. Or is this just an extra?

Good question which I'd like to know the answer to as well. I have Layena out there right now, but they barely eat it because they free range all day. I have oyster shells out there for them, and also some grit too. I don't think they are eating it - are they getting enough calcium from free ranging? I just noticed 2 days in a row that one of my black star's eggs are cracked at the small end. I also crush my egg shells and put those in the pen too. In the late afternoon I throw out some Wal-mart brand scratch (it's a mixture of many grains, not just corn).

Any thoughts on their diet?? Are they doing OK?

(They would rather go after the sweet cob and black oil sunflower seed that I throw out for my peafowl.)

It's been raining like crazy and cold as hell! It's supposed to get down to 36 tonight!! I am not even going to say what I'm thinking about that! LOL!

Oh on a sad note, Terry came home this morning and found one of my Turkey hens dead! Not sure why, but it was the mom to the little ones!!

Anyway, guess I'm gonna have to hatch somemore! Oh and if any one is interested in hatching eggs let me know!! If your from the WA thread I'll give you the second cousin price!! LOL! Who knows where that comes from???
