so for your layers...the combo of sunflower kernals, scratch and rolled oats is enough?  I have oyster shells separate. Is this their only food?  Is it nutritionally balanced?  Right now I am buying nutrena layer crumble. Or is this just an extra?

So far it is awesome !
I do add a bag of basic poultry (20%) or turkey starter (27%) every so often.
I just hate the brewery by-products that is the main ingredient in most layer feed...it is the used up grains from making beer.
It is spent, and could not have much nutrition...just bulk.
The whole grains are what the birds love !
Oats add alot of fiber & protein without the fat....and balance out the corn in the scratch.
All these 50# bags are MUCH less cost than a 50# bag of brewery by-product "layer feed"
I also use Broiler Max in their water, this covers any vitamins they need.
Broiler Max is vitamins & electrolytes & can be had at TwinCitiesPoultry.com and a envelope of it is just $4.95 (I think)
In spring I buy 4-6 bags and was using it for the meaties, but now I add 1/2 to 1/4 tsp of it to all my birds water, per gallon.

Spent grain from the brewers is just grain minus any sugars. It has 30-40% protein and the rest is fiber. I use fresh spent grain all the time my birds love it. Used with fresh greens and grains that are mostly carbs (hence cheap) it can make a great feed.

My Serama from 4hmom laid her first egg today!

To bad I have 3 hens from the hatch no cockerels...

Creame Caramel, Dark Chocolate and Tiny are doing great!

Caramel laid the first egg today!... waiting on chocolate and tiny....

She has a cockerel up for grabs, I think. It's back a handful of pages.

I am not looking for a boy :D in fact we might sell these but mom likes them and cuddles with them so they stay for a little while.
Its just super rare for me to hatch all girls... most times it a lot of boys!

Get a few brand new garbage cans....and a bag of Palouse rolled oats (or any brand) and a bag of scratch and at Walmart they have bags of shelled sunflower seeds.
Mix all in the garbage cans.
You can add a bit of DE also

CL, what does the turkey starter have that the chicken stuff doesn't?

Turkey starter has more protein then most chicken stuff... normally about 25-30% protein.

Whole grains do make a better feed but if your like me with no extra $, spent grain with a good mix of starch/carbs/oil grains, oyster shells and fresh greens makes a cheap well rounded feed.
Most spent grains can be gotten fresh from micro brewery's and cheap to free depending (free is normally to those who will pick up everything they have and every time they have it.)

What you want to do is make sure to follow the %'s......
% protein
% carbs
% minerals
% fat
% etc
(%'s depend on what your making it for)

I like the books I posted due to the fact that they post recipes as well as tell you what % this grain has vs that grain vs etc....
One thing you have to watch for is vitamin deficiencies mainly A and D's
Some of the books even have photos of what the birds will look like if they do have a deficiency

I use 1 bag layer mixed with brewers grain, starch/carb/oil grains, oyster shells, and alfalfa crumbles (run pellets through my apple grinder that is for cider)
Fresh Brewers grain is moist so I mix all dry stuff in a barrel and have the brewers in 5 gallon buckets. I scoop brewers then I scoop the dry and mix at each feeding.
I also mix in any left overs and then place in the feed trough.
Every 3 months or so I feed squashes cut in half seeds and all to the birds.

I have never had any problems with my birds having any deficiencies or being unhealthy nor have I ever had any mites, lice or bugs/worms of any kind. (they have a large dry area to dust bath in as well)
In fact I have a couple girls that are so fat they can't get on the roost any more. The 2 hens are large bodied and well.... piggies :D

So figure out what %'s you want to use for your flock then find the mix that will give you the right % making sure you cover the vitamins as well as everything else.

Do you have a website or anything for your meat sales?

PM me and I can give you my sister's phone number; that's as organized as it gets.

I do not know if there's beef coming up soon, but luau pigs are definitely available now.

Hi y'all! Everyone must have been busy today, nothing's happening here! I was busy with sick kids (William is eating finally, but has the blisters on his hands now and it's hurting him) and helping my DH move our coop where we want it. Eesh, it was a huge job just moving it over 12"!! Now I'm trying to figure out how to beautify it as it stands, it looks ridiculous all propped up on blocks. I think I'll surround it with some boulders or something, with pavers all the way around the coop and run that I can hose off.

Just for the record....I have 26 baby seramas right now. Just for estimate sake....let's say half are cockerels. I will be keeping probably 5 cockerels....by this fall I will need to rehome some. If anyone is looking. I want to let them grow out so that I can see who I want to keep. I have babies with 4 different lineages so I am going to be setting up trios/quads from each group. whoever I dont want to keep will be sold.
