Does anyone around the Tacoma/Olympia area have any Wheaten Ameraucana eggs or chicks for sale?

My husband really likes the look of the roosters and I just like ameraucanas. I love their beards and look.

Since we have the large EE broody, I was thinking might as well use her. I don't really want to hatch out eggs from my buff silkie/EE rooster, even though he is a very good boy, and would rather get some purebred that aren't as small. We're talking about picking up a couple brahma pullets from the feed store because we like those looks, but I don't want a ton of them.

I've been playing with power tools today. Had fun. We bought a hand-made, unfinished coop on Friday. It is beautiful, but we needed to make some changes for our Light Brahma. I moved roosts around... now one of the roosts is about 4 inches off the floor. We had to cut the nest box doors larger. I'm hoping she'll be able to scootch through a 10"x11.5" nest box door, because that's about as big as it's going to get without serious modifications. I changed out hardware on the clean-out door to a lockable latch. Filled nail holes, sanded, sealed cracks, etc. It sure is going to be pretty.

Tomorrow I hope to figure out how I'm going to do a poop board. We also have to make a decision on the pop door. I really want to get a chicken door from www.chickendoors.com, but I don't want to spend the money on it if our Brahma will grow to be too big for it. I'm hoping someone on the Brahma thread will give me a "yea" or "nay" on it soon.

I'm amazed at how much my chickens change each day. For the longest time, my Brahma was the same size as the others - now she's distinctly larger. She's going through a growth spurt! My RIR used to be the smallest, now she's larger than my EE. It's kind of funny - I think it's messing with the pecking order. Even my Brahma has started bumping chests - and she's never been one to do that.

And... the dog attack has definitely changed my flock. My EE is suddenly scared of noises and nothing used to bother her. When the garbage truck came through yesterday, she went into full panic mode. She used to just look the direction of the sound of the truck, and peep. My RIR, who was never friendly and didn't like being held, suddenly comes to my husband and let's him hold her. My RIR is the one who ended up in the dog's mouth (I discovered torn up flight feathers). After the attack, my husband held the RIR for quite a while. Now I think he's her chicken daddy.

It's not his fault! It's those other darn bully toms that keep trying to beat him up!

(keep him inside!) Hope he's fixed!
I'm in the process of trying to trap a bully tom. I'm trying to find a shelter... each one tells me to take it somewhere else. That thing has gotta go. He's a stray, and he's not fixed (judging from the other stray that recently had kittens). The tom has a huge territory in our neighborhood that he marks. It worries me because it comes to our back yard in the night - that's why he's going to be out of here as soon as I can catch him.

Jessica, you're cracking me up with the chicken math!

I'll admit... I was having guilty thoughts of "would anyone really know if I snuck a bunch of broilers into my back yard for a couple of months (exceeding the 6 I'm allowed)?" But, after the neighbor's dog attack, I realized the dog would know. Sigh!

I know! I also know I'll be much happier with the chickens I have if they're colorful, fun, happy, and giving me a full basket of different colored eggs :) By getting a bunch of different breeds I hope to prevent chicken math next year ;)

If I find a stray and nobody will take said stray, I usually just casually mention that I'll take care of said animal on my own and that gets them much more ready to take it off my hands. Just sayin'
