We just had a coyote IN THE FENCED YARD!!!!

I had the dogs in the house with me when I heard a commotion, and all the chickens were running toward the coop. I yelled and saw a coyote turn away from chasing them and run off. I let the dogs out, they could not find the coyote, but were sniffing like crazy. I found a freshly dug hole under the fence. Chickens are all safe and in their coop/run for a while.
Yikes, that's not good!
We had a coyote pretty close to our girls (luckily they were in a secure tractor) last year...my dogs saw him or her off pretty quickly and there hasn't been a return since. There is this cheeky cat that has been coming into the yard at night though lately. I chased it off tonight.

Our Aussie (Quincy) works very hard too !!
Hey, it's tough work being that cute! Anyway, he does keep Diane safe and you company, which is a pretty important job.

Jessica, your new run is AWESOME! Dave - great job!

Thanks! I take no credit. Dave is the mastermind. And WOW, does he work hard! Poor guy was really sweating out there when the sun was beating down all afternoon. We usually don't have sun. Like...almost never. And today, for the first time in weeks, we actually got HOT sun!

Today was a great day.

Lots of sunshine!

I bought baskets at the dollar store to make these... http://www.workdaychickenpictures.c...011/1/19_A_feeder_for_the_sprouted_wheat.html

Followed another suggestion from this thread and bought a utility tub (from the concrete section at Lowes) for a new dust bath for my chickens. All three can dust bathe at the same time now. Thank you to whoever suggest that.

Bought food-grade diatomaceous earth to add to the dust bath.

My Light Brahma is sleeping on the roost pole tonight! Ya! She really managed to get up there. You go girl! She's never been up there before. Please, oh please, oh please don't hurt your leg coming down!

My husband spray painted the primer coat on the chicken coop - inside and out. We're going to paint white gloss on the inside. We're still figuring out what color (with white trim) to paint on the outside. Picture to come soon...

And, my chickens really cracked me up tonight. It stayed light late, so I didn't get them to bed by 8:30 like I usually do. I was behind the shed mixing my compost bin and I hear my Brahma chirping up a storm. So, I went back to see what was going on (they were free-ranging) only to have all three spot me then follow me around the yard chirping at me until I put them back in the brooder. They wanted to go to bed! So cute.

You need runner ducks for herding, not call ducks.
You can work Calls, I've even seen them in some trials. But Runners, Runner and Campbell crosses are the usual ducks since they're so light and fast. We've worked Runners, Bali (Crested Runners), Cayugas and Magpies among others.

Ogress- When I lived in SoCal the coyotes would routinely walk the tops of all the fences in search of a yummy cat or small dog morsel. We lost several cats to coyotes after they'd escape and not come back at night. Coyotes can easily jump to the top of a 6' fence and walk along the top rail. NO yard is safe from them.
