First welcome to BYC and this thread...
Second no one here means to offend or tell you what to do...
Some of use have to deal with a lot of new chicken owners mixing breeds and then selling them as such and such.... So when we see someone breeding this to that we will speak up and say something about it.
I have to deal with a ton of urban flock owners that want Ameraucana's or Aracuna's that are like theirs... 99.9% of the time they have easter eggers they paid a lot for and they get upset about being told the wrong info by inexperienced new breeders. It makes buying from a "breeder" a unhappy experience.
I sell easter eggers and Ameraucana's when I can but I'm a small urban flock so my breeding capabilities is very narrow.
I always make a point to say this is a Easter Egger that will lay green eggs. it is NOT a Ameraucana.
Many of us also process our roosters for food meat as well as raise birds just for meat.
Oh! does anyone want my mid sized Easter egger mutt rooster? he's a sweetie and would make a good mixed flock guardian.
I also have a mid sized olive egger rooster as well..... Will post on craigslist soon but if you want em for livestock guardians or breeding BYC peeps can have them for free.
I'll be processing on thursday I think. (unless things go crazy again. But my Freezer is full!
I also have a black/lav orp rooster and it looks like a lemon cuckoo rooster for sale
I so wanted the cuckoo to be a hen!![]()
Quote: It's perfectly okay to crack up over a funny yolk you hatched, don't need the rest of us to egg you on.![]()
Hope your hatch is going well!
Thanks for that!
It's 3 am and I had to come downstairs and check on things. have 4 LF Favs and 2 silkies. 2 more Favs and I think 2 more silkies working on it. I am not sure how anyone gets any sleep at hatch time!![]()
So ya really were awake sending me text at 3:14 am. Quincy woke me up to answer cause I didn't hear it. lol
I am not a new chicken owner, but thanks. I am wondering if you understand that the reason there are so many different breeds is because our poultry forefathers mixed breeds. Maybe I am trying to make a rain chicken. Cross a Chantecler with a Muttran. Thank you for reminding me why I only stop in on occasion.
Well, I for one, have seen your coops and your chickens. You and your husband clearly know about chickens. You have stunning birds!
I do hope you stop in more often. I enjoyed meeting you two and your sweet child.
Sometimes little comments can be made in threads like this that can feel hurtful. That happened to me when I first joined this thread, too. A week or two into joining this thread I felt "ganged up on" after someone, who was also a gardener, but clearly didn't know my situation, or location, made a judgmental comment about something I was choosing to do on my land, that worked for my situation at the time. Others jumped into the conversation and I felt attacked. I almost quit coming back here. I'm glad I didn't. I put it behind me and chose to continue coming back. I've learned a lot from the folks on this thread and have begun to make new friends. For one, if I hadn't stuck it out, I wouldn't have met you, and I'm grateful to have met you.
My situation felt as if there was an assumption made that I knew nothing about gardening because they didn't understand what I was doing, how I was building my soil and what was going to work for my own land. Yet, I am an avid gardener. I took my first horticulture classes (2 years worth) more than 20 years ago. I was a very active garden club member for many years, until having children changed my priorities. I've taken numerous classes on gardening, landscape design and horticulture as an adult and have, for the past few years have considered becoming a master gardener (as soon as I can get the kid's schedule to work with my own). I have actively researched and studied permaculture (a technique of mini-farming) and biointensive farming for around 4 years. So you can imagine how a criticism by someone who knew nothing of me or my situation, could feel hurtful.
I hope you hang in here with us. I agree with your thoughts that all breeds came from mixing breeds. Every one of us has the right to try new things, see what works and see what doesn't. Experimentation is how most great discoveries are made.
I am delivering the last coop this morning, so Robin will see her new chicken digs. I am very grateful! Not sure how long it would have taken me to get my runs built if this forum hadn't grouped up and made it all work out.Thank you and your lovely wife Debbie again for giving up your weekend plus to come out and help us with our coops and runs! I know I speak for the other gals too when I say we are very grateful and thrilled with our new structures. The VelvettFog Western Washington Coop Tour was a success!![]()
