If anyone picks up one too many, I'll take it! It's actually close but I don't have a chance to go until Sat.

Trust me... three neighbors would know right away, and the rest would know via neighborly gossip. We live on the edge of a cul-de-sac. Our entire yard is visible to someone, even though we have a wood fence. Two-story houses look down over the fence in our back yard. One family, who has full view of our back yard, has already expressed dissatisfaction with our having chickens (not that they can do anything about it, because my chickens are legal, kept clean and I haven't violated any set-back codes).

Unless I raised them in the garage, there's no way I could get away with that many. And that would go against the idea of free-ranged meat birds. Some day I hope we can move and I'll be able to raise meat birds regularly. But, for now, I want to raise a few on a regular basis to teach my children the idea of where food comes from and give them the skills as they grow up to, hopefully, plan for and develop as sustainable lifestyle when they go out on their own. I wasn't raised around any kind of farm animal, and I made choices (buying a house in the city) based on the experiences I had as a child. I want to change that for my kids and give them life experiences that will give them options for their life as they grow up.
Bummer !

Hmm, I was considering adding sand to my big coop/run ground this year. We have bare dirt in there now and I just don't like the way it looks. What kind of bark chips are being used? Is this something I can find at Lowe's or Home Depot? It sure would be easier to carry than sand!
Pea Gravel works the best & it is a bummer to carry.
Easy to shovel into buckets though.
Sand gets poopy & sticks together like a giant hard pancake & will gob onto feathered feets.
I wash my pea gravel runs every so often to wash poop & mud out.
The gravel pretty much stays put, sand did not, it ran right out with the water.
It also stuck to my feet & was hard to clean off.

then we have the La Har poopy mudflow running down the hill
