We have talked about putting an apron on. I've designed and redesigned this poor run to death, making changes as we brought up different issues. The problem with using an apron is we'd have to make the run smaller, otherwise the wire sticking out would prevent us from being able to open our back gate, and we really want to keep the run as large as possible. As it is, our run will only be 44 sq. feet. Even though we still plan to let them free range when we're in the backyard with them, or use the chicken tractor on the grass when we're not, we want to have the permanent run to have plenty of room on those days it is too cold or windy for them to be in the tractor.

Keeping with the 10 sq. foot run space per bird, we decided a 44 sq. foot run would be perfect (which is good - as that is as big as we can fit). We wanted to make sure we had enough run space so, should we lose a bird, we could bring in 2 so any new bird would have a friend. 4 birds in a 44 sq. foot run should be OK, I hope.

I don't know, maybe my husband and I need to talk this thing to death some more. LOL!

Our original plan, before we almost lost a bird, was to just set the run on paver blocks.

I hear ya about opening the gate. I think it would be cheaper and easier to do the apron idea, but bury it a few inches deep. The description I read to put the wire in concrete seems like a lot of work to me, not to mention the added expense of the concrete. Also, maybe you'd only have to bury the apron in just the part to let the gate open. (Not sure that last sentence made sense).

Chickielady... please tell how difficult it is to set up that camera you posted. I was surprised that it was that cheap. I was expecting a camera system to be in the hundreds of dollars. What other equipment do you have to have?

I've been threatening to get a new camera system for years because of all the break-ins we have around here. Now that I have chicks, too - I'm thinking a couple of cameras might be in order. An added benefit - the side the coop will be on, is also the cul-de-sac side, and it might pick up pictures of night-time car prowlers.

I just don't want to spend more money on a camera system, only to have it be too difficult to set up. I've had one camera system sitting in the garage for years that I spend quite a few hundred dollars on, but could never figure out how to get it to connect to a VCR (yes, it is that old that it was VCR technology).

Thanks!
The cam comes with cord, and more cord can be purchased reasonibly at Radio Shack or Home Depot.
Home Depot & Walmart.com also have survelance cams.
Get a high resolution & distance if possible, at or over 420 resolution & a good distance like 16-20 feet at least.
Some have weaker IR beams so the camera is a good price, but can only see 6-8 feet !
Then it gets plugged into the video IN on the back of the TV, get a cheap TV at St. Vincents' or Salvation Army.
You then get a small, cheap DVD player/burner and a pack of blank DVDs and record up to 12-24 hours.
Next day you replay at FF and stop & play if ya see anything.

What do you guys use for 'wound care'?

I noticed that on my D'Uccle, there is a small spot on her foot that is raw. It looks like maybe one of the feathers broke off? It doesn't look really bad and she doesn't seem to be bothered by it. But wondering of I need to treat it or just leave it be?

THANKS
For that, I just wash it, and apply triple antibiotic cream/ointment like we use for us humans.

Poking my nose up for a moment:
Busy, busy, busy but also whacked back by grass pollen and Pacific low pressure systems, the combination of which get my ears and sinuses very unhappy.
Ten eggs from ten hens four days out of the last seven.
Tried to count all the roses in bloom but I keep forgetting whole classes of them- roses in pots, for instance.
My poor sheep still needs shorn, and I am doing very badly making phone calls at all which makes everything worse. I may yet end up cutting off his wool with kindergarten scissors or something equally inappropriate.
Life is rich and full and I need to ship cockerels and a rooster to the auction, but neither my DH nor I are in the kind of shape to get there early any day soon.
Call Big D ...she goes to the auctions alot & she is in OLY.
Maybe she can stop by & pick them up for ya.
BoldogKennel who is now "Srucon" here on BYC or PM me & I can give you her cell #
