Just got back from the Summer Sampler down in Onalaska. Bought some metal art from CR and some wine. Had a nice time. It was good to actually get out for a bit instead of sticking around and just doing chores.

now, back to it.

Oh, we put a couple of ducklings under the broody duck and she was delighted. Sadly, this morning the ducklings were running round - they hadn't bonded with her although she was trying hard to watch them they kept sunning after the big drake. So we ended up putting them back in the brooder. My poor duck, she so wanted some babies.

I need some sizes. Next spring I'd like to get the kids each a bantam silkie chicken that they can show. I plan to have the chicken tractor built ahead of time. My youngest son and I will probably make it a Cub Scout project in a couple of weeks while his twin sister and older brother are away at camp.

I've googled, yahoo'd and binged info for building a proper silkie house. I can't find anything other than a bunch pictures of silkies and an article about keeping silkies indoors (which I have no desire to do).

Can anyone give me some recommended measurements for a silkie tractor/house that can hold 3 bantam silkies?

Thanks!

Would anyone be interested in a gathering of chicken people sale type thing?
I'm thinking we could crash North Seattle Community College campus parking lot for a "swap" sale etc...
just park and sit and chat and ohh look I have chickens in my trunk.... must open the trunk to allow air...
You want eggs? wow I have some in my back seat... what a coincidence....

You might pose the question on the "Silkie Thread". But I believe since they are bantams they suggested 2-3 ft. per bird in the coop and 5 ft. per bird in the run. Of course larger is always better.

Silkies don't really like ramps, so you might design with that in mind. They like to be out of the rain because of their feathers not shedding water very well. They don't like roosts in general (high ones) but can roost if trained or on 6 inch high roosts. They love to have room to hop about and run, even though they don't fly. So the larger the better. Digging predators can get under unless you apron out your hardware cloth (1/2 inch is best as rats and weasels can get in 1 inch openings).

You can search for hardware cloth aprons if desired.

Modified dog houses work well for silkies from what I have seen on internet. My silkies that I used to have loved my shed coop since there were no ramps.

Good for you for building your coop before you got chicks. We just got our girls moved into theirs last week - when they were 11 weeks old.

Thankfully, their brooder was huge for them (a wire dog crate meant for a very large dog).

When 2 of my kids are off at camp, my 3rd child and I may build a Silkie coop and run with the extra supplies we have. We're thinking ahead this time, we wouldn't be getting Silkies until next year.

Our family would be willing to incubate for you if you found the eggs. They'd be straight run though.

Thank you for the offer, I have been trying to decide what to do. I really want to have the baby chicks, but I'm having a hard time finding what I want. If I go the egg route I may take you up on the offer.

I told you I'd bring the rain with me. We are at Volcano NP where the gift shop is doing a brisk business in sweat shirts, hats and windbreakers. Nearly all the tourists are in our black volcano hoodies. It is 60, cold, windy, rainy, feels like home only the ferns are 30 feet tall
