Checking in! I'm back on pg7761.....I'm in Eugene for the week hanging with an old school chum and eventually to help Mom and Aunt sort through my Grandma's house - RIP. I'm letting them get their headstart so they can do their reminiscing, etc, then will head over in a couple of days to start deep cleaning the house for the market. And pick up my share of the loot, of course.

This is my first experience with any breeds besides sexlinks, and those barred rocks..their voices are SO deep...

My girls are 13 weeks and just yesterday they got in their new boxes and played with the pine shavings :) so yes, I'd take the doors off.
I'd also wait to see if they all use one box to lay in. They probably will but it's hard on eggs. I'm hoping my girls will spread out (6 hens/3 boxes).
I have 7 laying and 4 boxes, they only use one box.

.......so far no broken eggs, but boy I've found 5 eggs in there once or twice.....

I even have plastic eggs and golf balls in the others to try to encourage them......6 more pullets that will start laying in the next month, I'm hoping they figure something out!

I had a brown cat named Bunny, and a grey cat named Mouse.

The black & white one was Pickles.
My friend has goats named Jackass and Robert. Then she got a herd protector dog (I can't remember the breed) and his name is Goat.

All of her chickens are named with the last name 'cock'. "Poodle Cock" was her first ever chicken- a Polish. I have her old coop (my mini-coop) and it has "Cock Palace" labeled on the side of it.....

OK I've posted on freecycle and on craigslist....

I need a few things this year if anyone has some just PM me and we might be able to work things out! :)

Ok so this is my list of needs...
Wide mouth canning jars! 1/2 pints, pints and quarts (pints preferred atm since I seem to low on those and 1/2 pints...)
4"x4"s 5'+ (most need to be 6' or longer) please
needed to rebuild garden fence since the critters now go over, under or through my current one... sigh
Tin roofing, plastic roofing, or roofing shingles needed for a couple projects.
2"x4"s 6' or longer please... (I have a bunch that are short no long ones left)
and 2"x2" to help finish framing out my greenhouse

I've been looking into buying 2 of the 14.8 cubic feet chest freezers so of anyone sees a great deal on new ones please let me know....

Things to remember....
I'm poor!
I can not drive
and I can trade if I have something you need :)

anyone want to come to northgate area and pick Oregon grapes for jam/syrup making?

I think I would like to, when will the picking be? I have to make sure I can make it.

It will be this week sometime....
depending on the time and what days people want to meet up together :) so far you can pick a day :D
* I have to be home to work from 230pm on and have wed/thurs off atm.

I figured we could all meet in the parking lot where the berries are.. bring chairs, buckets, drinks etc....
(berries are on a "no chemicals" campus that is protected by wetlands so in essence organic.)

What's with my birds being SO terribly hot in the coop tonight?? Inside the coop it was no more than 70 degrees when they went in to roost and they all sat on the roosts with their mouths open

I hope it cools off enough for them tonight! Poor things. They were pretty miserable for a while in the late afternoon but finally when the sun went behind the trees and I hosed off all the grass and surrounding large bushes (under which they take shelter all day long) they seemed happier. Poor kiddos. I just don't know how to keep them cooler though...one of their poops on the patio tonight seemed pretty watery as well, like the bird was too hot, but I'm already refreshing their waterers 3-4 times a day with cool water and hosing off the coop and run a few times a day too. I feel bad I can't do more!

My #1 son nixed the idea of me using our large window mount AC unit in the coop.

I think he believed I was serious!

Awesome. DH would be mad if I even joked about it. He hates the chickens and thinks they're spoiled. He's just jealous

I am thinking of getting a different door for the coop or modifying the one we have so that there's more ventilation. I could seriously cut almost all the door away and cover the huge hole with hardware cloth and I still don't know if it'd be enough ventilation. *sigh*

could you put in a window fan for the chickens, moving air always feels cooler.? Is your humidity high? That could explain all the panting even when temps are lower.
