Yes, it's 83% humidity

If it's still bad like this the rest of the week I'm going to have to try something like a fan. Might have to go get one at Walmart that I can hang at the top of the coop; there's a plug in there on the ceiling. Thanks for the idea!

Today was busy here as well. Hi CR!

Went to Snoqualmie Falls with the family and DSs friend. Celebrated our oldest's 6th birthday! What a fun time and he was just such a sweet boy today. Went to the candy factory in Snoqualmie and almost went to the train museum but realized we forgot diapers/pullups for the youngest 2 and didn't want to tempt fate, so went home. DS and his friend played with DSs new Pokemon cards and Legos for a while; DH cleaned out the monstrosity of a garage; I took DD to Costco to drop $400!! ugh. Not only is that a lot of money, but do you know how much $400 worth of Costco items weighs? I'm tired

Then all 3 kids got their new swim suits on and we ate pizza outside on the deck before going in the backyard to play in the sprinkler. Fun times.

I got my "Got Eggs?" shirt today too and it's super cute! Gonna wear it tomorrow. It's not the most stylish (I don't tend towards t-shirts much) but it'll be fun on occasion for working outside

I'm sure the chickens will love it.

I was surprised to see so much action on the forum today on such a nice day! Yesterday was DEAD!

I'm off to bed, night all. Still sick so no church in the morning, along with 2 of my kidlets. DH and the big boy will go though, and I'll listen online. Talk in the afternoon!

But I believe since they are bantams they suggested 2-3 ft. per bird in the coop and 5 ft. per bird in the run. Of course larger is always better.

Silkies don't really like ramps, so you might design with that in mind. They like to be out of the rain because of their feathers not shedding water very well. They don't like roosts in general (high ones) but can roost if trained or on 6 inch high roosts. They love to have room to hop about and run, even though they don't fly. So the larger the better. Digging predators can get under unless you apron out your hardware cloth (1/2 inch is best as rats and weasels can get in 1 inch openings).

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm glad I asked. The design I had in mind was a tractor that had a top level coop. They would have had to walk up a ramp. Gotta get my thinking cap on again.

Good grief... the way you described silkies makes them sound a lot like a very small version of my Light Brahma. That chick doesn't like ramps, hops - rather than flies, and won't sit on a roost. But, she's cute as can be, so it's all good.

I have lots of left over 1/4" hardware cloth that I'll be using. Yep, got a little freaky with predator protection after the neighbor dog attack. Even DH didn't question my purchase of 1/4" hardware cloth.

I don't think a mouse could get into that coop! I also have left over 1/2" hardware cloth that we used on our run. I should have plenty of both to build the Silkie house/tractor.

And, for those of you who knew we were talking about it with our current coop... we DID dig down, layed a layer of 1" chicken wire and poured concrete over the chicken wire beneath the floor of the run. The only "hole" is a drainpipe that was laid in a trench in the center and covered with rocks. I doubt any predator is going to dig as far as reaching that strip of drainpipe. I tell ya... I think we have a momma coon problem in our next door neighbor's tree - and I can still sleep at night!

Hubby saw a coon in our front yard last night before it was even dark. They seem to come out in the light when they have babies. Right now, I'm LOV'n having a coop and run that is tough to break into.

Inside the coop it was no more than 70 degrees when they went in to roost and they all sat on the roosts with their mouths open

Is that heat? Drama has been doing that. The other two don't. Drama is my fluffiest chick by far, so that would make sense.

Earlier I mentioned that Caunnie was quacking. Guess who else started quacking today... Drama! Good grief. They're chickens but they think they're ducks!

This afternoon I was wondering if I should install a misting system in the back yard. Do chickens like mist?
