Renee if you want to pack the kids up now and meet me at the Auburn splash park that's where we're going with a bunch of friends. Free lunch is at 11:30-12:30 and I plan to arrive right at 11:30. Then we'll splash around a bit and go home for naps. It's at the library, or Les Gove park. Text me if you're coming!

I'll text ya if I can get the munchkins out the door by then... Thanks!

I've thought about painting a picture of a window with curtains inside the door. In my spare time... if I can find some.

Speaking of time, I've killed enough. Busy, busy week this week. I'll be helping at Cub Scout Camp Tue-Fri. Today, I must dare to take the kids into a store to take care of some errands. Summer shopping w/kids in tow =

.

"Mom, can we have...?"
"No."
"Mom can we get...?"
"No."
Mom we want..."
"What does the word "No" mean?"
"I don't know."

This worked with mine: pick up one small thing for each of them in the first store, like a ring pop or something. Don't give it to them. Tell them if they ask for ANYTHING else you will put back the ring pop and they won't get anything at all. FOLLOW THROUGH, NO chances, NO warnings. It took a few tries with this but now my kids know to NEVER ask for anything in a store or it will be no fun.

That way, when you don't even have time to get them something small as a reward they should still behave after a while. Hope to help!

JNB. It is amazing the bond chickens have. My first flock I got two of each breed for total of 8.
Since they came home together except for the usal pecking order everything was fine.

When I tried to add two more to them months later it never worked no matter if I did the night trick or any of the other tips you see on here.

Chickens are a lot like people. Some times no matter what you do it just doesn't work.

One flock I bought three bantams with the big girls they were all chicks. Because they came home together they have been OK. The big ones though do make sure the smaller girls know who is boss. When I throw treats in the run I be sure to throw it all around or if something that doesn't work that way like pumpkins I cut up at least three peices so little girls get to eat also.

Over the years I have had some success adding to different flocks but was there a reason for that success?
Nothing I could come up with that mattered the next time I tried. LOL!

So now days I try to buy all the ones I need the first time for that run coop and run because I had to do like you did also one time building a coop and run when I just had to have dark eggs.
It's a budget killer also doing it that way.

Wish I had a good answer for you but at least you know you not alone it will happen to everyone eventually.

Hi Again everyone:) Just finished reading back in the post... Looks like everyone is enjoying the warm NW weather :) We had to build larger pens over the weekend because we cant let our chickens free range anymore due to neighbor hood dogs :( Will be OK because before summer is done we plan to fence our entire garden area off so the chickens and bunnies can all be protected behind a big field and electric fence :)

Since everyone had to be in their runs in this heat.. I did a couple things that the girls seemed to love... I halved a watermelon and froze it... They loved it.... as it thaws it gets mushy. Also I freeze veggies into water.... makes little blocks.. Great way to get them cooled off and a bit of extra water PLUS since they are in the runs it helps with boredom.

Now I have a couple questions and hope to get a bit of advice from you all.

First I keep seeing the term "Straight Run" in some post... what does it mean?

In one of my coops I have just my RIR and Barred Rock girls.... It seems my Barred rocks are being mean to the others.. picking at the some to a bloody pulp. I have to remove them an let them heal up and then go thru a whole process of reintroducing them to the coop and run again. This last spring I tried adding 4 new girls to the group... They were full grown RIR... I added them in the run in a separate little wire pen I let everyone "chat and visit" for a week... Then I slipped the new girls in at night into the coop... all seemed fine.. Then 2 days later .. I found 2 of the new girls dead and the other 2 badly hurt and hiding :( So I removed them and nursed them back to health... made them their own coop and pen out of a 8 ft dog kennel.. and one by one took my Original hens and added them to that pen over the course of a week... ( That was A LOT of Work and time) Everyone seemed in perfect harmony so about 2 weeks ago one night I moved all back to the Main coop... Low and behold 2 of my RIR are" all beat up and naked butts" That description courtesy of my 3 year old neighbor girl. I have tried the No Peck lotions and sprays and no avail.. Once again I have made another small coop for the 2 injured...

So thats my story and Im sticking to it :) Seriously though I am wondering... Is this a normal chicken behavior that Im gonna have to keep dealing with??? Is there something I could do differently to fix this discord?? My other Coop is a mix of several different breeds and a Roo ... they all get along lovely.. I d really like to add to my girls and try some other breeds but Im scared to death to try..

Any insight.. advice...is welcome .... Thank You..
You have nasty chickens. I've only been at this a couple of years, but I've never had that much trouble integrating new birds. I suppose that could be because my new birds look like my old birds.

I shared this on the Silkie thread, but I thought it was so funny I wanted to re-post it here. The Silkies and Seramas are 8 weeks old as of yesterday and I am still constantly surprised by how sweet and affectionate they are, but I'm telling you - while the Seramas will tolerate some petting for a while, they eventually fly off, while the Silkies would sit happily with us all day long if they could... I love them!

My DD had a couple of friends over yesterday and invited "her" 8 week old Silkie Lucille, to visit with the girls as well. Lucille was of course, a big hit. She seemed to take it all in stride which was pretty amusing to me.

Here is "Lucille's visit with the ladies" in photo progression.

Group photo - My DD Lily is on the right. "Lucille" is sitting on the lap of the girl on left, engaged in her visit.

Sitting prettily with girlfriends.

But all that petting felt soooo nice, that soon -

It all became just too relaxing -

And Lucille checked out for awhile and started cuttin' some zzzz's.... shhhh....
