Good news: the weather although still hot here is a bit more tolertable. This coming from a tacoma raised girl where temps above 80 were too hot and now in tri cities where 100 is kind of normal. ugh... oh yea good news.. We found a home for our brittany spaniel Chase. Put a second ad on craigslist (someone flagged the first one) and had 2 calls the next morning. The first one I tried to call back and got just a busy signal so called the second one it was a brittany rescue out of seattle. They had a guy that was going to be in pasco the next day to drop off a couple dogs and wanted a dog of his own to go hunting with. So he picked up Chase and chase liked him instantly. Got an email from him telling me how well chase has adjusted to spokane. This makes me absolutely happy that Chase has a good home.

We had a pig get loose this morning so had to go on a pig hunt. At least the pig didn't make it to my garden!!!! This pig is the boar and he's getting tusks. He was gotten in november to raise for meat. But for some reason, landlady wants to fatten him up more even though he is meaner than snot to the 2 girls. He was supposed to breed them and he never did his job. The girls are being pushed away from the food by him. We bought the boar and she bought the girls with the idea that he was to breed them and then she would pay to get him processsed for half the meat. ugh!!
Happy and sad for you rehoming your brittany. I know how hard it is to have to do it. It sure makes it easier to know for sure that you found a great home for him. Sounds like the naughty pig needs to be turned into pork chops ASAP!! Hopefully, landlady will still help with his processing!

We are a single club that offers multiple projects, such as dogs, poultry, cavy's (guinea pigs), model trains, sewing, gardening, leadership.

And some county's have very little 4-H participation, so if you don't find a local project or club, consider starting one of your own!

...but I think the 4-H requirement is that they must turn 6 during their first 4-H year.

My kids will be 10, 8 and 8 in October... sounds like they are all old enough for 4-H.

Awesome! I had no idea 4-H included things other than animal husbandry. Of the animals, we'd be primarily interested in poultry.

I have a 10-year-old who has been over-the-top crazy about trains since he was two. The whole family has begun to love trains because of him. He has small Lionel Christmas trains and a Lionel O-scale train set. Our family even chased one of the last Steam Engines that operate through Auburn and Maple Valley. We chased it again that same day as it rolled back through. It was a fun day for everyone, but the BEST day for my little guy.

My daughter loves sewing (well, actually, so do the boys - but, shhh... don't tell anyone that.

) A couple of years ago Santa brought her a very high-quality 3/4 scale sewing machine that has a 25-year warranty. The hope is it will last her through college. She also loves to help me in the garden.

OK... so now I'm definitely going to have to give 4-H a good look. We're in King County (Auburn). Hopefully we have good clubs. Being a Scout leader, I'm overwhelmed with responsibility so I don't want to start one on my own. I help out at Girl Scouts, as well. I'm hoping to find something where I can be a "helper" and not a leader. I truly enjoy that I'm only responsible to teach girl scouts every 4-5 sessions or so instead of every week like Cub Scouts.

I also run a Jr. FLL (First Lego League) team each fall (well, actually, last fall I had too many kids, so I had to run 2). That's a great program for the kids who are more brainiac-oriented and not sport oriented. All three of my kids love it. Last year, I had a 4-girl team, and all 4 girls were sports oriented - but they LOVED Jr. FLL as well. That was pretty cool. Here's info on that... http://www.usfirst.org/

My friends aren't really "critter" people so they all kinda look at me like I'm crazy when I get all excited about something animal related. It's sad, I feel bad for them. Hehehehe.

I'm a new chicken and duck owner and just being here in this section of the forum for a few minutes this morning, I've already learned several things. I've never eaten a duck egg before, I was really excited to get the ducks for their eggs because I read that they are healthier and bigger then chicken eggs, my research stopped there as far as the eggs went. Now I've been reading some of your posts about them and I'm a little bit nervous! I'm thinking, when my ducks start laying, I'm going to have to crack one when I'm not hungry, I tend to lose my appetite pretty easily. I'm very excited to be a part of this group, I've learned a lot in just a few days. I joined awhile back but haven't been on much until just recently and I'm really looking forward to learning lots more about my feathery friends!

I've been reading over some of the last few pages and noticed that several of you have lost a family member recently, whether that family member was a person, furry or feathery, I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope that with time, the pain caused by your loss will fade and you will be left only with the great memories and love shared.

I have some extra silkie chicks if that's what you're looking for.

You do? How old are they? When I get back home I'll try to remember to PM you. The week after next my youngest son and I will be building something together while his brother and sister are away at camp. We'll either build a Silkie pen or a cool chicken tractor... we're undecided. Hmmm... memo to self... must do more Silkie research...

I'd like to know, too. I'm still not totally convinced my remaining 3 chickens will be Silkies. I feel like I need to research Silkies a lot more before jumping into unknown territory. I think it *might* be fun (and educational) for the kids to show - like at the Puyallup Fair, or something, but I don't know anything about showing animals.

I know nothing about 4H... but plan to research that as well. Any info/advice on 4H would be appreciated.

If we don't get Silkies, I'm thinking Bantams. I love my adorable Light Brahma - but her size at such a young age is making me nervous. What am I going to do if she outgrows the beautiful coop/run we just built?!!

You need at least one silkie so that introducing new breeds is easy. I am trying to introduce some chicks I hatched out and didn't realize how nice it was to let momma do the introducing.
I will always have at least one silkie in with any of my coops.

I have silkie eggs in my incubator.
