Last I heard, King County stopped funding their 4-H programs.

Been away awhile. Not going to read 3000-odd posts! We made our move to our property, trying to sell or rent our house. Busy Busy Busy.

Fair is coming up this August (Grays Harbor), and I am a bit overwhelmed. I am a fair virgin, thankfully one other mom in our 4-H club is a complete newbie to this as well. I suggested they set up a "lost and confused fair parent" safe space in addition to the lost kid tent.

ETA: My youngest joined this last fall, at 4. If the club has primaries, the cutoff is 5 by Jan.1st or something like that.

King county is still going it should have 2 years left I think than I bet the plan will be to join with Pierce county I bet.

This is so awesome that there's a thread for each state! What a great way to connect and meet new people who are nearby!

My friends aren't really "critter" people so they all kinda look at me like I'm crazy when I get all excited about something animal related. It's sad, I feel bad for them. Hehehehe.


I'm a new chicken and duck owner and just being here in this section of the forum for a few minutes this morning, I've already learned several things. I've never eaten a duck egg before, I was really excited to get the ducks for their eggs because I read that they are healthier and bigger then chicken eggs, my research stopped there as far as the eggs went. Now I've been reading some of your posts about them and I'm a little bit nervous! I'm thinking, when my ducks start laying, I'm going to have to crack one when I'm not hungry, I tend to lose my appetite pretty easily. I'm very excited to be a part of this group, I've learned a lot in just a few days. I joined awhile back but haven't been on much until just recently and I'm really looking forward to learning lots more about my feathery friends!

I've been reading over some of the last few pages and noticed that several of you have lost a family member recently, whether that family member was a person, furry or feathery, I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope that with time, the pain caused by your loss will fade and you will be left only with the great memories and love shared.

I am new to chicken ownership and to this forum as well but I agree that it is a wonderful resource. I am the only one of my friends to have chickens but am lucky in the respect that they all think it is really neat. I have some neighbors that have chickens as well so it is nice to have people to talk to and get advice from. I have learned alot including keeping medications on hand at all times for poultry illness such as cocci as I lost one of my hens over the 4th of July to it. No symptoms until the morning of the 4th and she was gone by nighfall. Hope everything goes well for you and welcome!

Hi Jen! I'm glad to have another newbie here the same time I am. Maybe we will learn double the info because I will see the answers to your questions and you will see the answers to mine. I'm really sorry about the loss of your hen, that's terrible! How is the rest of you flock doing? I hope well!

My friends are cool about my animal fetish too, but sometimes I get the funny sideways look or a giggle. I don't mind it though, I've been a huge animal person since I was old enough to know what they were.

So, how long have you had your chickens? How old are they? What kinds do you have? Give me the scoop (only what your comfortable with that is)! Here's mine...I'm married to my high school sweetheart, 2 kids, 10yrs and 8yrs. Moved here from Colorado in 2010 because my husband was offered a job here that we couldn't pass up, and let me tell ya, we absolutely Love it here! We were finally able to buy our own home here just this last May, 9 acres in the country but close to town, it's awesome! Plenty of space to happily house our critters! Currently, our flock consists of 5 standard sized hens (3 wyandottes, 1 rhode island red and 1 black sex link), 1 standard sized roo (a wyandotte that was supposed to be a hen), 3 ducks and 2 bantams (1 cochin and 1 ameraucana), I'm not sure the sexes of the bantams yet, but they are both looking pretty "handsome".

What kinds of med's to you keep on hand? I probably should start working on a medical kit to have at the ready just in case. We are going to get goats soon too and that's one of the things I've found while researching them that people recommend. This one list for a goat med. kit seems like it'll cost more then the actual goat! Lol

You need at least one silkie so that introducing new breeds is easy. I am trying to introduce some chicks I hatched out and didn't realize how nice it was to let momma do the introducing.
I will always have at least one silkie in with any of my coops.

I have silkie eggs in my incubator.

I like having the chicks raised with or by silkies. They don't see anything odd about other chicken breeds then.

My little 3 week old brahma chicks think they can chase off anyone right now since their adoptive mom is one of my higher ranking easter eggers and is very good with that evil eye and peck. Mom was raised with silkies and doesn't see them as a threat to the babies so she doesn't chase them off. I'd put her and the babies in with the silkies since the coop is easy for little chicks to get in and out of. Some of the boldest will hang out with the much older ameraucana chicks and silkies.

Chickens checked on. They are doing so much better after getting used to the last week of warm weather, thank goodness! I left them in the run again until just now and they weren't thrilled but seemed to be doing just fine. They didn't even need the fan in the run today, no more open mouth panting!

Kidlets are playing outside and I'm catching a moment to myself. Can anyone say "Iced Coffee?"
