I have some chicks for sale, all are heritage and/or show bloodlines.
All will be a week old tomorrow and are healthy and active.
Also handled daily by kids so they are super mellow when held.
All are strait run.
They are the following breeds:

Blue, Black and a couple splash Jersey Giants

Blue and Black True Ameraucanas (also have some new ones hatching tonight too so may have some splashes also)

Barred Rocks

Lavender Orpingtons

If your interested just shoot me a pm
Min. purchase of 2 chicks and are all $7 each for BYC members.
Discount for more than 5 chicks.

They can't free range like LF because all kinds of hawks large and small see them as an easy meal.

Really? Bummer!!!

So, I'm planning to build a separate house and run for them. I don't want them mixed in with my LF. I was thinking approx 4x8 for the covered run... and 4x2 for the house (total land space 4x10). Too small for 3? Or OK? Man, I'm bummed they can't free-range. I was counting on that to give them more space.

Can some live in the garage in a brooder for a while until we know they are boys or girls? I was thinking about setting up a rotation... only 3 outside in view of the neighbors at a time. For all they would know, we'd only have 3 LF and 3 silkies (even though we'd really have 3 LF and 6 silkies). I know.... tsk. tsk. tsk. Is that doable - or is it flat out a very bad idea? I was thinking if we started with 6 silkies, we might be lucky and end up with 3 pullets out of the bunch.

Pralines

My favorite, Chocolate chip cookies

Anyone up for dessert?

I'd try them. Somewhere I still have the recipes we used in Biology for earthworm cookies and cake. You couldn't tell at all anything was added.toasted mealworms taste kind of nutty.

When I first got chickens years and years ago I had all my chickens free range large and small. I had silkies and than polish and RIR and others as well. I never had a problem. They grew up together and the chicks did fine also. Ive been very lucky with pred, I have a LGD running in my pasture. She keeps everything away.

Quote: Actually when they are still young you gould probably keep more in there than 3. You could split them up if you want and do a rotation. But I am going to keep all of mine in the coop until I know what sex everyone turns out to be. I will let the cockerels go as I figure that out. And those that keep me guessing will stay until I am sure. If they are all raised together you should be fine for awhile. I just wouldn't plan on keeping them crowded for a long period of time. The rotation sounds like a great idea. I may try that!

But since they usually sleep in a pile and don't always roost, I have planty of sleeping space for 8-10. Just not the run space.(in the tractor) Will have to see when thay all get bigger.
