Is July " National Broody Month ?"

I have a Wyandotte with two seven week old chicks, A Speckled Sussex with two ( two others died) two week olds, a Mottled Java with three two day old chicks and Yesterday one of my Bl Java's I got from Robin and a Bl Australorp I got from Dawn, went Broody on me

Anybody have a dozen Fertile eggs they want to sell me??? I'll put six under each girl !

Chicken Peer Pressure. It's real, I swear. As soon as one of my girls went broody, so did the others.

Our coop is 8'x8' with open windows in each side, along with a full sized door that is open, and the door for the girls. This coop is attached to a enclosed run that is 8' x 14". There is a large pellet feeder inside and a 5 gallon waterer outside.

We have 21 chickens. 10 of which are not old enough to lay yet, and 2 of those are roos.



I have a question ....

Can I leave them within these confines for 2.5 days, when they are used to being let out everyday, all day ?

or....

Would it be better for me to leave their run door open so they can get in and out, leaving them open for a visit from the coyote that frequents here ?

Thoughts ?

Sounds like you are going to be away for a couple of days. If it was me, I would NOT let them loose if there is any danger of predation. It would be much better for them to be a bit unhappy and confined and ALIVE than otherwise. JMO

Thanks! It's not blossom end rot. But, one of those links mentioned that early on you might just get male flowers. I hope that's what's going on. Now that I know the difference, I'll go out and look.

Male flowers start blooming earlier than the females. Look at the base of the flowers. Females will have small green pumpkin-looking things that look like a mini pumpkin waiting to be fertilized (need to brush up on my botany, but I think you won't be confused by "green pumpkin-looking things"). The males just have plain stem underneath. Take a few for a squash flower harvest! Just be sure to leave enough for pollination.

Two possible causes: failed pollination (cool weather will do it, overuse of pesticides) and too much nitrogen.

Blossom-end rot refers to rotting on the blossom-end of the fruit, not of the blossom itself.

It's not ideal but they still have over 8 s/f each while you're gone, combining coop and run. They'll live. Whereas with a coyote, they won't...

I have a catmint plant in my garden (catnip) and I just read that rats hate it. So, if you have rats, plant catmint! or sprinkle dried catnip around. I plan on throwing a few sprigs in with my chicken feed.

In the meantime, I'm going to try some catmint tea. I have a huge bushel that I just trimmed off of my plant. Would anyone like some? PM me if you would.

Keep them in the pen. Even though my husband didn't travel with me, he was gone most of the day at work and I let my chickens free range, I lost three of them during the week I was away. I would rather keep them unhappy and safe!
