So...someone on Craigslist contacted me about Ricky. Forgot to take the listing down when we thought we could keep him. Because of the huge sigh of relief I felt when I saw the email, I thought about it for the afternoon and then told the lady she could have him. She said Appenzellar's are her favorite chicken and she has quite a few, they own 20 acres in Enumclaw, and they DON'T eat the birds or any of their other animals. I'm taking him there later on today! It's a win/win for all of us; Ricky will have a great home where I won't worry about him and the incessant crowing won't drive my husband nuts anymore! I'm excited to see her setup, she said they're pretty spoiled

It always feels good when you find a good home for a chicken that you like, but need to re-home. I found a lady down the road from me to take my Ameraucana rooster last year. I just wasn't going to breed or hatch any Ameraucanas so I decided to make room for more layers. But he was sweet and I wanted to find a good home for him. She wanted to use him for breeding so I know he was going to get his share of the ladies! Lol!

That's great! Hope that he fits in well in his new home. Totally understand not wanting to upset the hubby - mine is tolerant but keeps asking when I will get rid of the chicks.

Can anyone recommend a good feed that I can buy from the Grange or Seattle Farm Co-op? Im a grad student on a tight budget so dont think I can afford organic. I would be happy with a good non-GMO conventional feed but Im a newbie and need some pointers. thanks!

As far as I know the only surefire way to avoid GMO is by buying organic, because organic is not allowed to contain GMO (or at least not very much). I'm not familiar enough with the conventional feed as I only feed organic (Scratch & Peck, but looking to maybe try something else) however my birds are very feed efficient because they have a strong preference for foraging. If I just let them into the yard they'll mostly eat grass and bugs all day and I barely see them at the feeder. Food scraps and compost bin access is very popular with them as well. I realize this isn't that helpful, I'm hoping someone else here will jump in with some better information

Have fun! We wanted to go but other stuff kept coming up today I want to go to the rodeo in Enumclaw too, but there's no time this weekend! Such a bust of a weekend!

Well all went well with the bee removal I was there about 5;30 done by about 7:30. It went very well especially since I was working alone. I got enough very nice brood/comb to make 5 frames. When I got home was when the trouble started. I figured since I was in the bee yard and suited up I should check the other 4 hives. Well seems NONE of the ladies were too fond of me waking them that early. Each hive blew up in my face. I am thinking it is time to wash my suit again or buy a new one. I took several more stings and all of the recent stings have been in the same spot. Inside my upper right arm. That spot must be really marked. Ok gotta go gonna try to get a load of scrap loaded for town today and then have a wiring gig to do tonight.
