Well, we just had a close call. I was catching up on posts and chatting with DH about our trip. The girls were free-ranging. I heard them start clucking - told DH to come with me because that wasn't a good sound. We ran out. That large (but skinny) stray male cat was on my patio about 5 feet away from the panicked pullets.

I want that cat gone!!! It has been terrorizing the animals in the neighborhood for close to a year. I hate it when people get an animal and just abandon it. It belonged to some people who rented a house down the road - and when they moved, they didn't want it, so they left it behind. The thing is getting so skinny, but I'm not about to feed it because I don't want it to have a reason to come into my yard. The girls attract it enough, as it is.

Could it be lured into a trap? With any luck, it would focus on food more than a potential threat to its freedom since it's skinny.

How funny you posted this today because after I let the girls out this evening (for the first time all day) I was still filling a waterer and Ethel started bok bok bok bGOKing up a storm and when I finally realized what was going on I looked over to see a HUGE white tomcat in our dry creekbed just staring at the girls. They were all on high alert thanks for Ethel and I threw rocks at that cat until it ran out the yard. Bold sucker though! I don't worry about the chickens, just my 2 smaller babies.

They did like chasing 6 year olds last weekend too!

I don't know what could have happened other than trauma? Do you think one of the other chicks pecked it's head? Or did it fall from a height? So sorry

I checked her over and didn't see any wounds to her head, she did have a few shavings in her mouth when I picked her up, but I thought it was from struggling on her back. Now I am wondering if she was eating the the shavings and choked. Of course she was the only one I named, and always snuggled up in my hand when I picked her up. The roosts in the brooder are 6" up would that be high enough for them to get hurt if they fell? The top of the brooder is a wooden frame on hinges with hardware cloth over it so the dogs and cat can't get in.

If i recall right my dear nasty little Tug was trying to nip one of the boys at first. So that may have a little to do with it also.

I was amazed at how much fun the kids had with the rubber chicken that I bought recently for the dogs.
