Hey Jess :)

One thing you should consider is adding some type of shade to the run. Maybe hang a tarp or something on the sunny side of the run (west?). I do remember how warm it was in the afternoon, but it was really the sun beating down on me and not really the 'heat'. If there was shade on that side it would have made a big difference.

My birds don't have any tree anywhere close enough to provide shade. They spend almost all their time in the shadows cast by the coops themselves. We've had nearly three weeks in a row of 95+ degrees - with another week of the same on the way.

Most of our customers are friends or cow-orkers ..erm... co-workers. If we're currently out of inventory, we simply tell them, "I'll get you your two dozen on Monday" or whenever. They are just about all fine with that. They understand that the heat reduces the production.

Three days in a row now I've gotten a really small egg. Something I"d expect from a pullet just starting to lay, only I don't have any pullets who are at POL. I don't know if the heat is the cause, or if this is a broody hen who's starting to lay again.
Today I am going to put up a tarp and help them out.

Is anyone interested in a pair of Ancona ducks? The female is chocolate and the male is either tri-color or chocolate. He has black markings on his head, but the rest of him is chocolate. They are 5 months old and I found the first egg from one of the girls this morning! I'm too busy and need to reduce my number of birds.

I have them listed for sale here on BYC. The price is very negotiable.

I would prefer they go to a good pet home, but...

Gonna be a warm one today boyz and girlz. Make sure to drink lots of water and don't spend too much time out working in the sun.
They are saying my area is supposed to be the hottest in the swamp today. last I heard they were saying close to 100. I think I will take a therm with me to see how warm it gets in the barn today.

I think plants also cool the area under them as well as providing shade. I'm thinking of moving my chicken run and running some grapes on it to provide shade.

Well I never got to the tarp idea today because my painter finally showed up to paint the run. In 92 degree weather.

Oh well, weirdo. The girls all had to be let out so they didn't turn white (like the time he painted the coop blue and didn't let them out and now I have blue birds

) but they are much happier under the trees and bushes. I moved a nest box out there, a waterer filled with ice, and a feeder. I hope they don't go back to the coop looking for anything, I really don't want painty birds!!! I also scattered ice under their favorite tree and they're all laying on the ice.

Yes, you are correct. Shade under a building or fence isn't the same as shade from a plant. Plants actually cool the air around them, so it is a good 15 degrees cooler under the trees where my chickens are now, compared to the covered back patio.

Hey all,
The mother/daughter team that I counseled in May is just about finished building their "Chick Chalet" and ready for pullets to move in!
Nice chick chalet, I especially like the toy chicken in the pictures! They obviously had a great counselor.
