Ok so my wife saw a pic somewhere on this website of a "bushy head white chicken" I assume this is a silkie since all the pics of silkies they appear bushy... any of you breed these or know where I might be able to pick 1(I say again "1") up at?

Well I would be using a 55gal "water" barrel. That is to say its a completely sterile and contained plastic 55gal drum. It simply has like a threaded port to draw the water from via syphon or pump. kinda like this http://www.quakekare.com/55-gallon-water-barrel-p-22.html so cleaning I think would be a non issue, same with mosquitoes.

Will it require a vent opening to keep the water flow going?

It looks similar to a rain barrel which requires a vent hole at the top so the water can flow out the spigot. If it does, make sure you cover the vent with good screening or you will end up with mosquitoes. That barrel looks like it is intended to stay closed as water storage and requires a water preservative to keep water fresh.

My guess is it will end up with a slime coat inside the barrel after a while. It doesn't take long for that to build up.

I have a rain barrel, and I would never trust that water for any use beyond watering the garden. I understand you'd be filling with fresh water (not roof water), but the slime build up over time could be cause for concern.

I don't know anything about this kind of barrel, so maybe you'll be fine.

intent was to put 100 drops of chlorine or vinegar per 55 gal of water. that will DEFINATELY prevent mosquitoes, and should keep slime/mildew from forming.

Yeah that's a Silikie, see the black skin? I'm not sure where to get them, are you willing to wait for baby chicks in the spring? OR, someone here is bound to have silkies, maybe they'll chime in ;)

Yes I will wait till whenever lol. I only want one and if I order from anywhere I am stuck with 3-6 chick minimum. SInce I dont know how to incubate or have any equipment live birds is kinda my only option. Although I suppose if I wanted to try to incubate I could just test out on Trader Joe's Eggs >.<
