I agree, I think it is a pleasure to see any well bred animal.

Oh my gosh, So I am trying to help out a friend of mine. The day before yesterday I got a call from my friend that her dog got out of her yard and into the neighbors yard, who had chickens. The neighbor claims that my friends dog killed her 5 chickens and 10 quail. Now Dear Friends dog has never done this before and has been around chickens and other farm animals before, just never lived with them. Neighbor called the cops and cops said DF had to put her dog down.
I find it disturbing that the dog was put down on just the neighbor's word, unless the neighbor witnessed the whole thing and had proof.

You are a good friend for helping her out. I don't know anyone with quail, unfortunately. Could you post on the quail section of the forum?

Really? Two things here. First, some of us don't give a hoot about the SOP. We raise chickens for other reasons: utility and/or fun! Secondly, you know that many, many (most? maybe all?) chicken breeds were created by mixing other breeds together, right? Welsummers and Legbars (even the name is a hybrid with the latter) come to mind, but I'm sure there are countless others.
Be nice. He didnt say anything wrong

They are beautiful, and just from the pictures look like happy, well adjusted dogs.

Hi all, just a drive by posting. :)

Anyone get frost yet? We had our first frost Friday Aug 24th.
Luckily I saw it on the weather report and was able to get my garden covered.
Yesterday we had our first picking.
1 patty pan squash, 5 baby beets and 6 cherry tomatoes. I don't know why I bother with a garden. LOL

No frost yet, but nights are getting cold (so are some of the days). Your garden sounds like it is at the same stage as mine. I often don't recover the cost of the seed. I have been looking at green tomatoes for months wondering if they will Ever ripen. I have lots of cucumber and zucchini plants but no fruit is bigger than the tip of my thumb. Peas and beans have done well as usual, at least I have those.

There is not a chance in H$%& that I would be killing my dog. My dog would be sent away until it was worked out legally. The first thing would be proof that my dog was the one to kill the birds. Just because someone says so is not enough. Especially with all the thousands of dogs and cats being abandoned by people losing their homes to foreclosure.

Sheila :)

this don't pass the "smell test".
under what authority was the dog put down. who did it?
I would not rely on an "eye" witness, they are notorious for getting things wrong.
all of the chickens and all of the quail were killed? by one dog? something ain't right here.

I did get a handful of tomatoes, but only because they are tiny things. Here is a picture of them, they are appropriately named "Red Robin".
