Oh, and anyone who's curious, here a pic of me from earlier this week. My friend drove me out through a few little old logging towns in the foothills of the Cascades, and I can't remember which one this is. Can anyone tell me? LOL.




And here is the best boyfriend on the planet, at whose house our chickens reside, and who is the primary chicken care-taker and soon-to-be new-coop-builder so I can add more chickens! We're huge Seattle Storm fans, and here he's showing off the Sue Bird jersey I got him for his birthday the night before at a Storm game:

Pictures help before everyone has a chance to meet you in person! Cute boyfriend, - it's nice that he supports your chicken interest! You guys make a cute couple. Thanks for posting.

I remember the challenges involved in being a newbie. I've had my flock for a just about 1 1/2 years, but I was on the forum for 10 months before I got any chickens as I read all the information I could, was perusing coop designs, etc. Everybody who was here at the time was very nice about putting up with my constant barrage of questions as I got closer to coop building and acquiring birds.

But yes, I'll admit, at first it was like playing double dutch jump rope - I would just look for the right opportunity to jump in and hope I didn't mess up everyone's game. So much of the time I was watching and waiting. I learned a lot just by lurking!

Many of the Washington BYCer's have also had benefit of meeting face to face - have you heard about our potlucks at the chicken shows? They're legendary!

Lots of food, we all bring our own chairs and find a good spot to gather. That's been a great way to get to know each other and to put faces with the names. Of course, name tags have been necessary! Occasionally we have smaller, more regional meet-ups. Someone will just decide it's time for a group in an area to get together and agree on a place, date and time. Those are always nice too.

A lot of us have our quirks - but intention is much easier to decipher when you're face to face with a potential new friend and can actually see that they're not hiding an ax behind their back.

So my advice would be, YES, hang in there! Chime in when you want, ask questions as you need and if there is ever opportunity to be part of a live meet-up, do it! You'll find that there are some very special, generous, helpful people that just might become very good new friends. It's been a rewarding experience for me.

Yes, jumping in on this thread is a little like merging onto the freeway when folks are driving at mad speeds! I too was pretty quiet for months before I finally connected with some people and started posting regularly. But I tell you, once you meet some BYCers in person, you will realize what incredible folks there are here. BYC peeps are some of the most giving, kind humans I've ever come across. And there are some quite outstanding cooks, so our potlucks at poultry shows are real good eating!

This thread moves pretty quickly, so it's totally normal to miss posts and get behind. If a post isn't responded to immediately, it may not be people ignoring, it may have been swallowed up in the tidal wave of posts after it! Or, folks just may not have an answer.

Did you ever get to the Grand Tetons ?
I have always wanted to go there too.....................on my bucket list along with a guided hunt/fish/stay at a lodge thing in Alaska.....

Yup .. almost always go there when in Yellowstone -- the same entry fee covers both parks for a week.

Oh, no I do blame CL and CR....and many more....all enablers. But I love all my birds. fortunately for me so does DH. but he does roll his eyes every so often at me.

OK nobody get all bent here. But the rally monkey is my attempt to get the WA thread BACK to the fun friendly way it was not long ago. I think when we make that happen many folks will see what an awesome group of elderly old codgers we are and hopefully people will also feel more comfortable to join into the group as it is.

We went there... on a hazy day.

We could bearly see them, and they didn't even show up in most pictures. Of course, with our luck, the very next day was perfectly clear.

NH as in New Hampshire? Like the reds? That was my all time favorite hen, a new hampshire red. That will be an interesting project, NH and BR. Both great breeds. What are you hoping to get from the cross, as I know nothing of Hambars... lol Now youve peeked my interest!

Yeah .. New Hampshire. That first cross will produce sex-link offspring. Take the males from that hatch, and put them over NH Hens. That will give you 4 colorings. Take the proper males and the proper females from that and breed them. In the end I hope to have a line of sex-link, dual purpose birds that breed true.

I can buy some Hambar hatching eggs.. but they are 55 bucks a dozen, and I'm not ready to pay that much for eggs.
