She might not be mad, is she singing an egg song loudly and obnoxiously though? When someone is in the nest box, my Buff Orps, sometimes my GLW, and sometimes my Marans/EEx sit outside the box talking and screaming and complaining up a storm. I think it's normal; they are basically "encouraging" each other to lay! I hope you get a different colored egg today, how exciting!

No wonder out of the 5 laying hens I was only getting 2-3 eggs a day in the nest boxes. I was thinking someone must be holding out, hubby & I were starting to get annoyed I was feeding them & they weren't giving back. I even had to buy some store bought eggs. This is either Red or Lacey doing this or they both are sharing this hole in the grass, cause they both lay a light colored egg. They made a tunnel in the grass & sticker bushes. 10 eggs total in there.

So far a pretty productive weekend. I placed a couple of ads on Craigslist Friday and have sold 2 of 5 Silkie boys and one Serama cockerel. Still have 3 Silkie boys and that gorgeous blue English Orpington left of my cockerels! The Orpington isn't going on Craigslist yet - still hoping Judges4 gets hers sold so she can take Mr. Darcy. I have been feeling bad - every night I go out after dark to the grow out pen to "snatch" him out of the coop and away from his girls. He gets so panicky and tries to hide underneath them making screeching noises because the monster is trying to kidnap him again. It makes me sad. I try to reassure him as we walk into the garage so he can sleep in the dog crate but he's still not used to the routine.

In the morning he's so cute as he ambles out of the garage after me once he's been released. Unfortunately, he has to announce his triumphant return in the way of 3 good crows.

The girls have all been SO FREAKIN' NOISY today though! Aghhhh! They are using all three nest boxes, girls are standing in line, so they're either complaining because they have to wait or their rejoicing because they've laid their egg. No matter which - both announcements are LOUD.
I distract them with treats but then 30 minutes later they go right back to their raucous ways.

I think they're making the most of the last summer's days. Maybe I shouldn't be complaining. I may be missing that egg song in a couple of months!
Thank goodness our neighbors have either been gone this weekend or just very tolerant, (so far).

Looks like I'm going to have to be bribing the neighbors again.

This morning we had a great visit with Jessica (FireWifeJess) and her kids. She finally got to meet my birds. She brought over a carton of her beautiful, colorful eggs so I could see the many colors. We were a little surprised to see that her RIR lays much lighter eggs than my RIR. Mine are darker brown and some are speckled.

What color eggs are RIRs supposed to lay?
mahogony to creamy tan

I'm not going to worry about it, since the birds are eating them.  I think they are enjoying their diet today.  I'll just have to buy a new bag much sooner than I had expected (hoped).

If it had been teenagers, it would be one thing.  But, we're talking about little kids who have never been around chickens before.  My 8-year-old daughter should have known better than to get the bag of worms out for them to play with - so she's more at fault.  The other kids would have never known where to look for meal worms.  Believe me, she and I had a discussion about it this morning and knows that if it ever happens again, she will be doing chores to replace the bag.  I have a feeling they got to being silly and just threw the worms into the air for the fun of it.

I am sorry I thought they were older teenagers. I am glad your girls are enjoying them

Oh we had so much fun this weekend in Ocean Shores! Hope everyone had a great weekend.

HAPPY (belated)BIRTHDAY CR!!!!!!

I also have a girl named Lacey, she is a Silver Laced Wyandotte. Even funnier is for months she found a nice little cave to lay in also. I just let her do it because we knew where she was laying and the kids loved going in and getting her eggs.

I am so excited and yet so very bumbed that our kids begin school on Wednesday. That will be a very busy day for me, drop kids at school, get my lisence renewed, take hens from RonB and KMHunter to my friends house to give to the neighbor, and then start on my new coop.

Hello to any new peeps that I missed this weekend.

Does anyone have some spare chicken wire sitting around in the Tacoma, Spanaway, Graham, Eatonville area? I have to chick proof my run before I let the babies out. My current wire is too big, and the chicks and mama hen are driving me nuts being locked up. Gotta get them outside in their own run, like yesterday. If anyone does just PM me, I can't seem to keep up with this thread. Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Firewifejess sorry I jumped in re: your son's wasp stings but, you wrote "We gave him a HUGE (for his age) dose of Benedryl" I don't know you so ,couldn't tell you that's the way you talk and didn't mean it to be taken seriously. Maybe you could use the smilies or say - LOL or something.

BTW a doctor once told me that Aspirin overdoses are very common . People don't realize aspirin is included in many OTC medications and the amount can really add up. This has nothing to do with your son but, I was surprised that aspirin wasn't totally benign- people take it so freely, and are often encouraged to take daily as a health routine. I had internal bleeding from aspirin many years ago and also suffered some hearing loss. Had no idea my sinus OTC and others included aspirin. I haven't taken any since., and really scrutinize ingredient panels now.
