Oh we had so much fun this weekend in Ocean Shores! Hope everyone had a great weekend.

HAPPY (belated)BIRTHDAY CR!!!!!!
I also have a girl named Lacey, she is a Silver Laced Wyandotte. Even funnier is for months she found a nice little cave to lay in also. I just let her do it because we knew where she was laying and the kids loved going in and getting her eggs.

I am so excited and yet so very bumbed that our kids begin school on Wednesday. That will be a very busy day for me, drop kids at school, get my lisence renewed, take hens from RonB and KMHunter to my friends house to give to the neighbor, and then start on my new coop.

Hello to any new peeps that I missed this weekend.

Yep I do try to name them either by personality or something to do with color etc, practical names Lacey is the SLW, Red the RIR, Pinky is the Barnie with the pink band, Broody is the Cookoo Marans that went Broodie & raised Pinky last yr. Sister is Broody's sister cause she's a little lighter in color but couldn't come up with a better name lol. I have 4 more baby chicks to come up with names but I will do it slowly. I didn't start naming them till last yr when I had down sized the group from 13 to 6. Lost Freaky Chicken to something so hubby let me get 4 more. Now I have 2 rescued roos, hoping someone is missing them & not have been dumped.

I made my daughter not mess the nest up so Lacey doesn't go find another area of the yard. Between the moles & the chickens up rooting the rocks hubby didn't do much mowing of the back 1/4 acre yard, its got a slope to it...he just doesn't like doing it so he left it. The chickens kept it down ok, just got really overgrown along the fenceline in areas & the chickens took advantage of that. We had totally looked around the whole yard & didn't see it till I was watering a rhodie that was looking a little sickly from lack of water back there (oops) & there the nest was. Lately though all the chickens eggs look the same light color, the 2 Marans & the Barnie should be a darker brown. The 2 eggs out of the nest box was light. Maybe I need to stand out there to see who is laying what again. Just odd.

And, I'm off. Just got a text from DH and it looks like we're going to the horse races soon. BIL's two horses are racing today - against each other, again. It's kind of funny that they run against each other every now and then. They've had quite a few wins with these two, and we're hoping they'll have another great race.

Firewifejess sorry I jumped in re: your son's wasp stings but, you wrote "We gave him a HUGE (for his age) dose of Benedryl" I don't know you so ,couldn't tell you that's the way you talk and didn't mean it to be taken seriously. Maybe you could use the smilies or say - LOL or something.

BTW a doctor once told me that Aspirin overdoses are very common . People don't realize aspirin is included in many OTC medications and the amount can really add up. This has nothing to do with your son but, I was surprised that aspirin wasn't totally benign- people take it so freely, and are often encouraged to take daily as a health routine. I had internal bleeding from aspirin many years ago and also suffered some hearing loss. Had no idea my sinus OTC and others included aspirin. I haven't taken any since., and really scrutinize ingredient panels now.

I typically exaggerate a little when I write; I try to not be overly dramatic but weird things happen to us! LOL Why?! We also are VERY careful with meds. I don't give my kids pain meds or cold meds or anything unless they're seriously miserable; I just didn't want to play with fire when it came to stings that were beginning to swell up; my son's arms are super tiny around (I can grab his arm all the way around between my thumb and forefinger, and the sting on the inside of his upper arm had swollen all the way around to the outside of his arm! So an extra dose of Benadryl was good for that. We are almost 100% natural in how we parent; no meds, no doctors, no shots, organic (almost) everything, yada yada. We're careful

How do you all afford the water to have a garden? Do you have your own well?
The cost of water where I live is ridiculous. If I was to water the lawn and garden everyday, my water bill would be over $60/month. So when the dry comes, my shrubs get some water, the grass (otherwise known as weeds) turns brown and goes dormant which inturn mean I don't cut grass which saves me buku $$.
With that said, I am leaning towards a garden next year, but I will have to see when the time comes.

We paid $90 for water this month. I guess that's what I get for having 3 kids and doing so.much.laundry; I also run the dishwasher once a day. I do not have a garden and cannot even begin to imagine how much it would cost to water a garden. Though, I have heard of lots of tips and tricks for saving water; save bath water, save dish water, save water from the shower while it runs and you're washing or waiting for it to get hot, etc. I think once we start to garden in some raised beds near the back door of the house, that is how we will water those plants. I can't imagine taking my hose out to our 20'x20' garden to water the whole darn thing if it were actually filled with a garden. Eesh! I feel ya Mikey!

On the fence about if I want roos. With the running around the yard trying to get pictures of these new rescued chickens as they aren't human friendly as of yet they are really looking like 2 roos someone probably dumped on us. My hens are making alot more noise today, being very vocal. Only clucking like a hen out of the darkest one, think they are too nervous around our hens to crow this morning, I was listening for it. The one with markings seems to be less spooked. I like him. I will put up signs in the neighborhood but have a feeling they were dumped.

I finally got my chance to hold the darkest rescue chicken. Um now I know why someone dumped these. So I was trying to herd these 2 into the coop, worked last night with hubby's help. Didn't work tonight, maybe cause hubby wasn't there to help lol, they ended up climbing up the woodshed. They could see the other chickens & wanted in that way but wire blocks them so they made it up to the rafters. I climbed up there, grabbed the tail of the blackest one, got its wings under control & in my arms. It relaxed or so I thought. Next thing I know is it had reached it head back & bit me, threw my shirt to my breast. Talk about ouchy. I pulled my shirt away from my skin & the chicken still had my shirt in its beak all the way to the coop door. Dropped it inside the coop. That nasty bugger broke skin!! I wanted to check out its feathers but not after that, didn't give feather looking another thought. Its new name is Stew cause the end of the week if no one claims them that one will go to another home or in the stew pot, I don't like to eat chickens I knew but after that I might this one lol. Not keeping a nasty chicken around here. My 8yr daughter saw mom (me) get hurt & she was near tears for me. I had to tell her it wasn't as bad as it was so she isn't afraid of all chickens.

The other one was nicer plus I knew he would be ok cause he had let hubby finally catch him yesterday & he didn't try to bite. I still kept my hand near his neck just in case. He defiantly has the pointy hackles on the neck.

Crazy painful day!!
